Liteon SOHW-1693S ... about three years since I first bought a DVD-writing machine for my main desktop PC. This was an NEC model 1300a and was one of the first to handle both DVD-R and DVD+R formats, without paying the somewhat inflated prices being bandied around by Sony at the time. Overall, I think it cost me around £130. Oh! How the mighty, (or prices, in this case) have fallen. I’ve just taken delivery of a LiteOn SOHW-1693 DVD writer that not only writes to everything that the NEC will, AND with its 16-speed write-velocity it’s four times faster, but it will handle dual-layer writable DVD media too, and all for £29! Pioneer DVR 106 ... a never ending quest to improve my computer set up I decided I needed to purchase a DVD recorder drive of some sort. Backing up my important data using my CD-R drive was a time consuming operation which used four CD-R`s every time. LG GSA 4040B ... drive is a good choice if you want a drive to both write ordinary DVDs and archive data to DVD-RAM (plain DVD-RAM discs not in a cartridge). Many old burning apps aren?t yet compatible with this Multiwriter. Firmware A104 as supplied, since updated to A300. Software supplied on CD: B's Recorder Gold v5.32 B's Clip v5.32 Neo DVD v5.0 BHA DVD-RAM driver Cyberlink PowerDVD XP player. The mechanism is smooth loading and quite running just like my other LG drive a DVD-ROM. I?ve had two CDRW drives fail ? both were noisy.
