This item is necessary if you have a Macbook Air and need a disc drive for any reason. I think that Apple tried to be too futuristic with this design, as I still find myself needing the CD drive from time to time especially to watch DVDs and download tracks off CDs into iTunes. However, if you watch films online via Netflix (limited selection) or download everything straight from iTunes etc, then I would imagine that this accessory is less necessary for you.

I also use a disc drive to install things from CDs onto the Mac, so for me it is a necessary item. Around the time of my A levels when I was using this computer, I had revision CDs for powerpoints too so it came in useful and I got lots of use out of it.

--My personal experience--

You can buy different external drives that are compatible with Macs but this was my preferred choice for material reasons, as Apple products are so stylish!

My first impressions were that this product is a little overpriced for what it is. It retails at around £70 at the Apple store, but you can get discounts online so shop around. I think I bought mine from Amazon.
You could get away without needing an external disc drive, but for my personal needs I decided to invest in one anyway.

This product is silver and matches the standard Macbook Air design, it is very sleek looking and features the Apple logo underneath the disc drive.

The only problem with this is that when you are sitting with the laptop, the cable is subject to stress and it is not that strong a cable so I can foresee future problems like is the case with the Macbook charger. The disc drive is prone to sticking at times which is it's main flaw along with the awkwardness of having the laptop in your lap and the CD drive draped down the side of your lap, thus putting tension on the wire.

Available online, on the Apple site, in any Apple store and across the internet in various Apple outlets and Amazon and eBay. I would suggest that Amazon and eBay would offer you the best deals if you are looking for a bargain! I would also suggest not buying second hand as it is quite a flimsy product unless you can see what you are paying for.

--Summary--

Overpriced and flimsy piece of equipment, but fits in with the silver Apple Macbook Air theme so if you like your accessories to match there's no other option for you! 4 Dooyoo stars.
