Advantages: Efficient

Disadvantages: Bulky

I bought this external DVD writer for my laptop as I didn't have a built in one.
The drive caddy feels very plasticky but seems solid enough assuming you take care of it. It can be used either flat or on its side and needs its own power supply (which makes it rather cumbersome).
The drive writes to all DVD and CD formats and does so at quite good speeds. Connection is via a USB cable although it does perform better if you have a USB 2 port available.
The buffer under run prevention prevents any spoiled or failed burns and I never had any problems with the discs I created with it.
This drive also has a lightscribe capability which can burn images onto the face of the disc (assuming you have a compatible disc in the drive).
The software it came with was the standard Nero disc creation program. It included a basic lightscribe burning program although you may really be best using a different program... Nero gets a bit technical sometimes.
If you have space for an internal drive, then you'd be best off with that. But if you have to use an external drive, I never had any problems with this one... you should be fine with it too.

Summary: Not bad if you have to have an external drive
