+The product in one+
I went out and bought this product (£19.99 for me) in hope of replacing my old Sony DVD ROM which was good for nothing I wanted to do, such as burn off recordings of memories such as people's weddings and times on holiday. Upon unpackaging the DVD RW, I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to install this as I hadn't really had any experience with computer building back then and looking at the ports on the back I was a little concerned that it wouldn't be straight forward - I couldn't be much further from been wrong. I looked at the instructions that were included which made it seem a little easier for me and got to work.
I took the casing off my PC (Nice and simple for me as the side just slides off) and I disconnected my old drive and took it out (Few screws to unplug). To install this item I just had to literally put it back where my old one was and reconnect all the wires. I was done! Just as an added point I chose this burner, not only for the great price, but also because it is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7.
Now it was time to see how well it burnt off my media, I had created a 7.2gb iso of all my holiday videos and pictures, I put in a Verbatim DL disc and pressed burn. The DVD burner can burn off discs at up to 1.5gb/s but I chose a much lower speed at 4x . The Burner features a buffer under-run prevention which makes sure the disc is always useable. Buffer under run is when the computer's transfer speed is to slow and can not keep up with the rewriter's speed. This device, embedded with the buffer under run prevention, enables the burning to pause and wait, so that the computer can catch up with its self.
After the burn was finished I checked every aspect of the disc for any scratches and none were caused, I then put the disc into the computer and checked every piece of media on there to make sure it was burned off properly, and I can assure you this was done perfectly.
With this re-writer you are capable of burning discs of DVD-R (SL/DL), DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD+R (SL/DL), DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW and the burner itself gives you the option to choose the disc which you think is best suited to the media you are wanting to burn off or you can let it choose for you ( I prefer to choose my own as sometimes they will get it wrong). It can burn DVD's at a maximum of 12x which is extremely fast for a DVD or you can burn CD's off at 42x which will take like a minute to burn the disc off and that's including verification.
As for the build of the re-writer it is of an extremely good quality. It is built solid, of strong materials, and not that it would ever take a fall been inside of a PC unless the PC's drops, but it would most definitely be able to survive a hit or two.
+How does it compare to other Products?+
Compared to other product this is top of the range. It can burn every single type of disc, at extremely fast speeds, reassuring the discs burn completion with the "Buffer under run Protection", it has serial ATA technology which is a 1.5GB/s evolutionary replacement for the Parallel ATA physical storage interface used to connect storage devices, such as hard disks, DVD and CD rewriters to the PC motherboard. Serial ATA is scalable and will allow future enhancements to the computing platform of any type, for this reason I always stick with Serial ATA products now and I recommend it to you out there as well. For the price of this unit and the features that it supports I would say it's top of the range, with excellent quality burning and definitely a top competitor for Internal Re-writers.
+Does the Product Achieve its Purpose?+
The product achieves it's purpose in provided a cheap, durable, fully featured internal DVD/CD re-writer, that has Serial ATA technology and buffer under run protection. It is capable of burning all type of discs at great speeds, this product suits every body.
