Being someone who has visited the states on more than one occasion, I have acquired a number of region 1 DVD's on my travels. Many of these DVD's are not yet available in their blu-ray form and as such are not yet purchasable in the UK, because of this a number of my favourite movies are only available in their older form. So naturally i decided that buying an external drive compatible with region 1 discs would be a good investment, this external drive is capable of playing region 1 discs and allows the film to be played without changing the region on my Macbook (this can only be done a few times) so now I have an efficient way of playing my older DVD's.
Onto the style of the drive, ultimately this piece of kit might simply end up on the side of your desk for example and you'll be pleased to know that it is quite sleek and pretty (weird description I know) and appears to be made of plastic which does not smudge easily, something which irritates me with a lot of Samsung products generally. It appears to be of a decent build quality and for the amount you will pay for it the result is more than sufficient. Anyone wanting different colours is also covered as Samsung provide a number of different colours ranging from red to blue but I myself chose the neutral black colour as it simply matches any room. Another point as a warning is to not use this disc drive with any kind of USB hub! I plug a lot of different devices into my laptop and as a result I use a USB hub, unfortunately as this drive takes power through whatever it is plugged into it will not work because of the small amount of power provided by the hub. This is unfortunate as ultimately you will have to plug this device into the port on the computer itself. I suppose it is also important to talk about the size of the drive and the good news is that it would certainly be possible to carry this around in your bag with your laptop for example. Because it is powered through the laptop it does not require massive AC cables to be used which means that you will only ever need a USB cable to make it work.
Fortunately I was pleased to discover that this drive is Mac friendly and allegedly it also works with Windows 8 so anyone requiring this drive for newer computers are fully covered in that regard. Another rather cool feature this drive has is that it can be connected to certain Android tablets, a feature which I have not seen in any other drive: unfortunately I couldn't test this as I do not own an Android tablet. Despite this I have heard positive things about this feature.
Ultimately I would say that this little disc drive would be useful for anyone who still wants to watch their DVD collection on their laptop and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to watch region 1 DVD's without changing the region of their computers disc drive.
