A while ago the Mac I use at work decided to stop reading disks. Rather than paying a small fortune to send the Mac off to be repaired I decided a simple external disk drive should do the job. Now being a Mac I was worried about what disk drive would work with it as Apple are notorious for their compatibility issues. I came across the Samsung disk drive and decided to take a punt with it.
I do like Samsung. I have a Samsung TV, phone, speakers and various other household appliances. They tend to be reliable and stylish but with decent level price ranges. The disk drive is by no means anything to get excited about but Samsung definitely deliver in terms of usability and reliability.
The unit itself is little bigger than a disk and is fairly light. The design is simple black with grey edging and the Samsung logo printed on the middle. This is very common among Samsung products, with most of their ranges following the same simple but effective design principals. There is only a single button on the front of the unit which can be used to open the disk drive, as well as a LED which flickers green when its in use. The back is even more simple than the front with a plug for the USB cable to fit in and nothing else.
The disk drive was easy to set up (even on a MAC) with it just needing to be plugged in via a usb port. When a disk is in use you must right click the disk icon and select eject to remove it, instead of just pressing the button on the front of the unit, which can be a little frustrating (although this may only be the vase with a Mac). The unit is pretty hardy as it has been thrown about my desk a fair bit but still works well.
The drive may be a little outdated now as a few years old but has stood the test of time. It was a little expensive at around £50 but has been worth it as had no trouble since the day of purchase (and was a lot cheaper than repairing the Mac).
One final point that I will mention. As it is so small and portable the drive has been used a number of times on other machines that have had malfunctioning disk drives, so has saved they day more than once!
When six months ago my DVD reader on my desktop PC died, I had the choice between an internal or an external device. Since I have an old Dell PC and its components must be ordered via the Internet, I found it interesting to buy an external device. After all this I can connect to any PC and is not a wasted purchase if my PC breaks down.
Samsung was founded as a small export business in Taegu Korea. It grew as a leading global electronics company that is known. Provides innovative and quality products and their mission is to make consumers' lives easier. The company takes every challenge as an opportunity and believes in their global leadership in digital technology. Their ambition to become world number one.
The DVD multi recorder comes in a cardboard box with predominantly white and black sides. At the front there is a viewing window so the device is easy to see. My device is black in color, but you can choose between different colors. On the front is in the upper right corner of the Samsung logo in the middle and that's a smart portable DVD Writer, super write master. Furthermore, the slogan: "Record your memories" and stating that it is USB powered, it has netbook booting support and compatible with Windows 7 and Mac computer and contains AV connection.
The device is a pretty square and beautiful shiny. Simple in appearance, but functional. This DVD multi recorder is available in different color. On the front is a small button that opens and closes the device, but it is inconspicuous in the design process.
To use the device, you must use the cable USB connection to your PC. It takes its power from the computer itself so that the charger is certainly not necessary. An extension cable for connection to your TV is not included in the package, but can be purchased extra.
This package included a bootable CD-ROM containing the software needed for a fast start. I download the drive, which went very fast and smooth, about 3 minutes. You put the CD in your PC and the program opens instantly and automatically. On this screen you will see the installer Nero, a guide, information about updating the software and explains the warranty. You choose installation of the Nero software. Then a screen will open where you can follow the process. If the process is finished, you can use the device immediately.
it is a small device that easily connects to any desktop PC. Beautiful in appearance and installation is fast and easy. Good value for money and with a solid performance. The unit will play DVDs smoothly without interference. With this device you can also DVDs and put your photos, videos and music on it. A multifunctional product that you can do anything and everything. I am certainly happy with this product. You can buy this for around 60 pounds.
This simply plugs into the usb ports of any windows pc and after a few seconds you have a fully functioning dvd writer. I use this as a install drive and dvd player for my netbook when I'm travelling light and cheap.
The drive uses very little power in any mode of operation being writing or just playing back. It appears to be a laptop drive put inside an external carrier.
The drive is very quiet and doesn't vibrate that badly even with some of the worst unbalanced disks. The spin up and down times are very good and it seems to have a very good spot between power saving and performance.
the drive itself is a manual type tray where you have to press the button and slide it out and not a powered tray, this works well as it saves power and sometimes it gets caught on the surface it is on.
the case is a glass black which shows up fingers well but matches most of the kit recently having the same problems.
The cable supplied is pretty long and has a dual power in case you having power issues from your usb ports, which is again is very long. You also get what is almost a straightened paperclip for when you need to get a cd out without power, its pretty useless and lost within seconds.
