Toshiba SD 290 ... product is described as noisy - it makes a reassuring faint whir at times when loading. The display is minimal - well, I want to watch the DVD, not the display. The remote is small - not more so than a mobile phone, and it s very clearly laid out. And finally, it doesn t always respond to the first push of a button, which has to be repeated. My experience is that it responds perfectly if the remote is carefully aimed at the sensor - just to the right of the on/off button, in case you hadn t noticed: it s no good just waving it vaguely about. Sony DVP SR90 ... little box of electronics may not look expensive, quite simply because it s not. At first glance, in fact, it looks positively cheap and plastic. I was not sure whether it would be up to meeting the requirements of a family of four constantly playing different DVD. However, once it was up and running - even I found this task easy, and I am famous for not being able to understand manuals - it worked a treat. You may need to tweak the contrast and colour buttons a bit to achieve the desired hue, but otherwise there shouldn t be any trouble at all playing DVD, Avis etc. The menu is simple to understand and overall it performs the job well. Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD ... brought one of these after i got annoyed with my Toshiba HD DVD taking so long to load up films i thought i would try this out insted. Once it arrived i plugged it into the xbox via the USB cable provided but it also has to be externally powered with another plug which meant i had to get another 4 way adapter, once i powered it on and i turned on the xbox the film didn t start automatically and with no play button on the HD DVD drive itself i wasn t too sure what to do but after some searching it was on the start of the xbox page saying PLAY HD DVD , simple.
