Apex AD 703 ... is a versatile 3-Disc DVD changer that can play, DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, CDR, CDRW, plus it can play MP3 files from CDR and CDRW discs. It is for Dolby Digital and DTS movies. For Dolby digital you can hook the 5.1 speakers directly into the back and get true Dolby 5.1 sound because it has a built-in decoder. For DTS you will need a receiver that is DTS ready, you can also run the Dolby through a receiver that is Dolby 5.1 ready. One disappointment is there is no optical hookup, though there is a coaxial hookup and a S-video hookup. (Optical would be the use of a fiber-optic cable.) Pioneer DV 530 ... bought this DVD player about 6 weeks ago after reading an article in What HiFi? which gave the player a rating of 5/5 and commented that it "concentrates on delivering the best sound and picture at the best price". I bought the silver version rather than the black DV-535. Generally I did find that it was about £20 more - however I would say that it is well worth it. Picture The picture quality frankly cannot be faulted. The pictures are crisp and contrast is excellent. The only thing that is I have noticed is compared to some DVD the layer change half way through the film is more noticable that some DVD players that I have seen. Sound Again the sound ... Philips DVD 750 ... player was my first introduction to the world of DVD, and it remains my favourite player of the many I've tried since. Starting with the player itself, it's solidly built, with a well-designed front and good firm ("clicky") buttons for the major functions. It wouldn't look out of place next to (or below) any high-end TV, though the display seems to attract dust more than the rest of it! The open/close button is slightly annoying though - you press it once, and it turns the machine on, but doesn't eject the disc - for that you've got to wait until the machine reads there's a disc there, and only then can you eject it. ...
