Alba DVD DS-5711
Advantages: Cheap and easy to use
Disadvantages: Cheap and breaks easy
I received this DVD Player with a phone contract some time back. I wasn't really in need of one, nor did I actually want it as I have had a lot of problems with Alba products.
But I put it up in my room as I didn't have one and used to only use my computer to watch films on, figured it would be nice to watch something in bed comfortably for once.
The player itself is pretty standard. In fact, it's incredibly standard, featuring everything you need to play a DVD and pretty much nothing else. On the player itself are the ordinary buttons play, stop, next chapter, back a chapter, and has a big goofy-looking on - off button. It supports region 2 (if bought in Europe, of course) PAL DVDs and comes with two scart plugs at the back.
The player is pretty slim and looks quite good. It can be storyed on top of any existing devices you have and doesn't take up much space at all, which is a good thing.
The remote features the same oridnary run of the mill features, with everything you expect from a DVD player remote (and the ability to scroll through menus and things, which means losing the remote means you can pretty much only play the feature film) and is easy to use and hold, although the buttons to feel a little sticky and difficult to press at times and you get that annoying thing where you feel like you have to press much harder to get it to work, even with fresh batteries in.
Playback is decent, not better or worse than any other ordinary DVD player I've had, and I guess also depends on the scart cables you use. However, it seems that this all lasted for about a month, before the player started jumping and lagging, skipping through bits and altogether simply refusing to play the film. The laser wouldn't read the discs and it would make a horrible choking noise as it strained to play the film. It would play the film right for about an hour, then begin messing everything up.
It became a rarity when it would play a film to its fullness and after a while it would just start playing badly straight from the beginning.
I don't know if it's just my model, but I doubt it considering problems I've had with other Alba products
