Alba DVD-Player DVD 165
Advantages: User friendly and very basic
Disadvantages: cheap looking
For Christmas just gone I bought my Nan a new DVD player, at the time I was living with her. My Nan isn't into technology and despite having a full HD 42 inch TV and Sky HD she tells a me that she can't really see the difference in the picture. I wanted something very basic which is why I chose this model.
I got the DVD player from Argos and it was £24.99 I had a £10 off voucher for spending over £100 earlier in the month so it was a real bargain.
The box was nothing fancy in fact it was white with a blue logo on it and a few bits of information about what is inside the box.
The DVD player is very compact, it measures W 32 cm, D 23cm H 5.5cm.
There is nothing fancy about this model it is black in colour and to be honest felt lightweight and a little cheap but then you get what you pay for.
At the far left of the DVD player is a button to turn it on and off this button is much like a button on old TV's you need to get up off the sofa and press it to put the player on. The DVD drawer is next to the power button, in the centre of the DVD player is a display which is very small. Finally there are 3 buttons to the right the open/close button, the play/pause button and the stop button.
With this DVD player all you get is the player, the remote including two AAA batteries, instructions and the power cable. There isn't a scart lead to connect it to the TV this needs to be purchased separately which is cheap enough. As this is a basic player there is no HDMI port just 2 scart holes.
Once the DVD was set up we put in a DVD to see how it all worked, the DVD loaded fairly quickly and I was suprised to see it automatically changed to the right AV channel to play the film, this is great for me as when I am not at my Nan's she constantly rings me to ask how to work her Sky and various other things I was sure she would manage with this.
The remote control is small and very basic, the display on the DVD player was very poor, it looked very dated but having previously had a DVD without a display I suppose its better than nothing.
The DVD player worked well, it didn't jump or skip and there were no pauses in the film which I was worried about after reading reviews on Argos website. Another useful feature of this DVD player is it is region free. I have a lot of American DVD's from a time when they were much cheaper and generally more expensive DVD players refuse to play them as they are coded to region 2. I shouldn't admit to this but it also plays copied DVD's. As with other DVD players you can also play CD's and I have made my Nan some CD ROMs with pictures on which she enjoys watching.
The only negative about this DVD player is the build quality it does feel flimsy in parts such as the DVD tray but for the money and the use it gets I can't complain. I would recommend this for someone who enjoys the occasional DVD but doesn't want anything too fancy.
3 out of 5 from me.
Summary: you get what you pay for
