Advantages: can do everything
Disadvantages: no optical hookup!, poor remote
This is a versatile 3-Disc DVD changer that can play, DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, CDR, CDRW, plus it can play MP3 files from CDR and CDRW discs. It is for Dolby Digital and DTS movies. For Dolby digital you can hook the 5.1 speakers directly into the back and get true Dolby 5.1 sound because it has a built-in decoder. For DTS you will need a receiver that is DTS ready, you can also run the Dolby through a receiver that is Dolby 5.1 ready. One disappointment is there is no optical hookup, though there is a coaxial hookup and a S-video hookup. (Optical would be the use of a fiber-optic cable.) For video, there are 2 RCA outputs and 1 S-Video output. For audio, there is a coaxial digital output, a 2-channel analog output (RCA outputs) and 6 RCA outputs for the 5.1 hookups. Other Features It plays both in NTSC and PAL. It has a Parental Lock to keep the young one out. There is a Built-In Screen Saver. (Nothing Special) You can zoom spot 2 or 4 times. It has upgradeable firmware so you can fix any bugs that maybe found in the system. Mp3 Mp3 music files are so compressed that I get over 160 Mp3 files on one 74 minute CDR and over 170 on one 80 minute CDR. When playing them back it will give you around ten hours of music on one CD. You can also play them back from your CDRW disc but they will not hold as many songs due to the formatting of the disc, which takes up space. (I haven't tried any CDRW discs yet.) CD You can also play all your CD music discs with the Apex AD-703 and can load three on at a time to give you a small selection of playing time. You can also play your recorded CDR and CDRW discs. DVD This is a DVD player and this should be the main purpose for buying one. DVD movies are of the best quality in picture and sound that is available for the consumer today. DVD also has features like
no rewinding any more movies and skipping to a scene of your choice quickly. The Remote The remote is not of my liking because the buttons are all too small. Then there is changing to like scene #24, you have to hit the +10 button twice to get twenty and then hit the four button to make it twenty four. Most of the remote is easy to navigate but I am not happy with this remote. Overall The quality of the picture is great and the sound of the Dolby 5.1 directly hooked up sounded good, not great. To get the great sound was hooking it up through the coaxial hookup into a Dolby 5.1 receiver and the DTS also sounded great through the receiver. Considering a price of about $179 it is a bargain if you want a DVD player that can also play Mp3 files.
