Argos Value DVD Player
Advantages: cheap, works well
Disadvantages: not very stylish
After my old dvd player (which I'd had for about 7 years) died a death, I decided to replace it. My previous dvd player was just a cheapo tesco value type one which cost me under £20, since it had served me well and I had no need for a fancy pants expensive dvd player I decided to try this argos value range one.
I picked this up at my local argos store and it cost me £19.97, I bought it because it was the cheapest dvd player they had at the time (looking at the website now you can pick up an alba dvd player with 1/3 off for £15.99). It came securely packaged in a plain cardboard box, with instructions and the dvd player itself is just plain black coloured. Of course it won't win any style awards, but if you are expecting to buy a dvd player and still get change from a £20 note, then you wont really care how stylish it is, I certainly didn't anyway.
The dvd player is relatively small and compact, much smaller than my last dvd player, it measures approx 22.5cm across, 23.5cm from back to front and has a height of 4cm. The dvd player is mains powered and has a power cable approx 1.5m long, not the longest in the world but as long as your power socket is near by it shouldn't be a problem. The dvd player has one scart socket connection (worth noting it doesn't come with a scart cable), a component video socket and an s-video socket (I connect it using the scart socket so cannot comment on how well the other connections work). The dvd player comes with a remote control (which is also black) and it has 3 control buttons on the front of it (on/off, play/pause and eject disk). The remote is really easy to use with an on/off button, fast-forward/rewind, skip chapter, menu ect, all the different buttons you would expect to find on a dvd remote. The dvd player plays region 2 dvds which is the standard type of dvd you get in the UK.
I use my dvd player with my 14" tv in my bedroom, I can't get television reception in there so I just watch dvds on it. The picture and sound quality is perfectly fine, although it is used on a small television so I cant comment on how it looks on a bigger screen, I did check out reviews on the argos website before I bought it and most people had good things to say about it (it has over 400 ratings!). My only slight problem with this dvd player is that sometimes (especially on my peep show dvds!) it just randomly starts playing all the episodes before I have told it what to do, its easy to just skip back to the main menu and tell it what episodes you want it to play and it doesn't do it all the time, so not a massive problem. My old dvd player used to have the subtitles on as a default, so I'm used to dvd players doing weird stuff to me.
All in all I would definitely recommend this dvd player, it is really cheap, easy to use and works well (except for its weird playing all episodes blip), I didn't expect the worlds best dvd player as it cost so little, but what I did get was something that works well and it extremely good value for money
Summary: a really cheap basic dvd player that does the job
