Argos Value DVD Player
Advantages: Nice controls, simple packaging, easy to understand in every way.
Disadvantages: Doesn't have additional features.
As a student, life becomes all about budgeting. You are living under impending financial restraints which limit your every spend, no matter how much you want/need a product - or a cheese burger. So when I went out in search of a DVD player I was looking for something well made at a cheap and cheerful price. As a result of my search I came across the 'Argos Value DV D Player' for an unbeatably low £20 retail. I had no choice but to give the thing a go.
Getting the package home I undid the brown paper surround and came across a standard looking box with a small amount of information inscribed about the product inside - just a few lines naming the thing. This was to be expected so it didn't bother me in the slightest. Opening the box up, there sat my DVD player - a very basic looking grey plastic box with an eject-able disk tray and three button controls on the front, nothing on the sides, and sockets on the back for the power cable and TV connectors (scart and S-video). For the money this is what I was looking for - simplicity from value. They haven't tried to over-complicate anything to make the product seem better than it is, it's exactly as the box sparsely informs.
Plugging everything in was easy - however there is an instruction handbook inside the box which helps those less technically minded (the ones more likely to buy the thing) get going. All the cables are supplied - all that is left to do is add a DVD. According to the handbook there are several versions of DVD the device can play (which was a surprise): DVD, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. I'm not sure whether these versions of DVD cover different nations or whatever but it's nice to know the machine can accompany them .
The controller is simple but effective. All the buttons are well explained (using small symbols), and the whole set up of the controller is easy to read and understand. The buttons are rubber and unresisting when pressed, and the plastic buttons on the actual player are more rigid but still equally easy to operate.
The device feels like it will last. I've got a feeling (partially from reading the handbook) that the thing might overheat easily if bits are left on top and underneath it, or it is kept in a confined, un-ventilated environment. Overall though, I can't fault anything else with the product, its easy to use, plays multiple types of DVD and can be bought at incredibly low value.
Summary: Average - as expected.
