For my son's 4th birthday myself and my husband decided to buy a dvd player for him, I know this may seem a bit of an extravagant present for one so young, but times have changed since my youth making this an acceptable present.

To offset this so called "expensive" present we gave Con our old television, thus meaning he could finally watch his films rather than being forced to watch Hannah Montana on a loop, in the privacy of his own bedroom.

So when looking for this dvd player I was more than aware of the criteria, cheap, cheerful and easy to operate, as my son and daughter have more knowledge of how the electrical things work in my house I knew this was going to be operated by him!

After a wander round Asda, this being the place I was hoping to get something satisfactory from , this being down to me having a 10% off card, I came across this little gem.

The product I will now review is - "Asda Smart price - compact dvd player"

The initial thing that attracted me was the price, as this is a Smartprice product it was of no surprise to me that this was being sold for around the £7.00 mark, and although I do try to instil a sense of pride in their things my kids don't always look after there stuff to the best of their abilities.

The second thing was the size of the dvd payers itself, it is advertised as a "compact" player, the size being around 6-7" in length, 5" in width and 2" deep. This made a perfect size to fit into my son's "snug" bedroom, which translates as the box room, well he was last in!

Due to the fact that this is a cheaper dvd player I was not expecting it to be able to perform miracles, I did expect it to do as it was supposed to, and it has not disappointed.

Once removed from the box it was a bog standard connection via the scart lead into the back of the television, this comes with a lead but only a short one, so if the unit is to be placed any sort of distance away from the television you will need to buy a separate lead.

Once set up there the usual features you would expect, open/close, play and standby buttons on the top of the unit, there is also an extremely small remote control, and I mean small. This would not be ideal for anyone with sight difficulties, the remote is around the same size as a 1 ½ credit cards stuck end to end.

I will list below what is present at the rear of the unit, though I cannot pretend that I know what half of them are, but in the hope you know what they are here goes -

AC power cord, ok I know what that is, and it doesn't stick out too far and so far hasn't got caught up on anything!

Audio left/right output jacks, no...not a clue!

Video out, again, nada!

S-video output....d'oh!

Coaxial digital audio output, ?

Scart socket, finally one I know and one I have already covered.

This unit states that it is compatible with DVD, CD, CD-R/RW & JPEG.

After reading the list of buttons, I was surprised by some of the features that are actually featured, though my son will never use them.

There are the normal buttons that you would expect, play, stop, pause, open, close and of course standby, in addition to these there is the menu button, access to the audio and how to change the language without having to go through menu. There is also an angle button that can access the camera angle and the option of zooming in on a picture, but this does depend if this is available on the film you are watching.

It is to be noted that this remote will not work if more than 6 metres away from the unit, which is comical as my son is never more than ½ metre away from the unit, even when watching it in bed!

The remote takes a small watch sized battery (CR2025), but this provided, and very easy to insert.

There is not much more I can put about this unit, needless to say it is very easy to use, very easy to set up, comes with full instructions for the electrical illiterate among you (me too!), and has the option of placing a parental password system on it which is a great little system that can read the age rating on the dvd being watched and can block a specific film by using a selection of code numbers, again all featured in the instructions.
