Cyberhome CH DVD 405
by ccman
Bought this unit for £49.99 at a local WH Smith, in late June, 2003. It is little larger in area than a mouse mat, but does everything that a full-size player does - and some things that they normally don't! In particular, it will play jpegs as a slide show and play mpegs - as well as MP3s! Also, with a few presses of ... the R/C (be sure to ask the assistant for the photocopied page of instructions re this!) it becomes multi-region - so you can even play imported American disks... Plays CDs also, incl MP3 tracks. The remote control is small and easy to use - and the fact that the player itself is so small is handy when space is at a premium [eg when you already have to find room for a VHS, a Sat Box, a CD player (and a Betamax, if you are that old/sad!)] The picture quality is excellent - and the JPEG and MPEG handling is a particularly welcome feature. We are very happy purchasers, esp at this price! (Bear in mind that a SCART lead is £4.99 extra, if you don't already have one.)

Cyberhome CH DVD 402

The CyberHome CH 400 DVD Player is available for £50 from http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?isbn=CHDVD400&DB=622 You get them to deliver it to your local branch of WH Smiths for free, or pay extra for delivery to your home. There are a lot of cheap DVD players around. What marks this one out is 1. Its £50. ... You also get £1.80 worth of WH Smith points 2. It plays lots of stuff. There is a simple hack to make it multiregion, including RCE-encoded region 1 disks. It plays music CDs, video CDs, MP3 music files or JPEG images on a CD, DVD-R's etc. Some people say it has macrovision disabled, so that you can record from a DVD onto a video cassette. Others have found this isn't so - it might depend on the batch you get. 3. Its small. You don't get a display on the front of the unit, but the box is only 225mm x 240mm x 60mm (W x D x H) which makes it the same size as a lot of micro HiFis. 4. The sound and picture quality are fine. You might get better if you pay a lot more, but reviews I've seen say its as good as anything else up to ~£100-£150. 5. It plays NTSC DVDs on old PAL TVs. If your TV plays PAL at 60Hz, then this is fine. If it only plays PAL at 50Hz it might be a bit jumpy as the DVD player converts it. The only downside I can think of are that you need to buy a scart lead separately. Wilkinsons sell decent shielded ones for £4.99. Cyberhome AD L 528

My boyfriend bought this dvd player a while back, and used it with great satisfaction till it started having its quirks. After about a year of loyal service this player decided to have issues with its power button. Now it takes about 15 minutes of fiddeling before it powers on, and even than the question is if it will work throughout the ... movie selected. Usually it freezes up once or twice and this results in it needing to be reset (again the 15 mins of fiddeling) before working properly again. Also with age comes a dislike of "dirty" discs. The player often complaines that a DVD is dirty/unreadable, upon inspection no marks can be found and after a few resets the player will accept the disc again. The fact that it plays any DVD/cd you throw at it, including MP3 and cd-rws is a definate plus point. Add to that the fact that it's region-free and can be made Macrovision Free (anyone need to copy a DVD to video?) are great advantages. Connecting a dolby set is easy seeing as it's a;ready equiped with a Dolby 5.1 Pre-amp. All in all it's a great starter DVD player, for those who have a low budget or are not sure if DVD is their thing. For the long term I would suggest getting a better make/model.
