Advantages: Crisp Video, Clear Sound, Fantastic value for money
Disadvantages: Unresponsive controls, Looks ugly, Fiddly Menu system
I got an ex-demo model for £80 from Richer Sounds. For a casual movie goer such as me it was easily worth it.
Get it out of the box, and the one thing you'll notice that its a bit ugly, but is reassuringly heavy. Plug it in and you'll be set back by the slightly confusing manual, and the messy and unresponsive remote. Its icon driven menu system is a bit of a stuggle and you'll probably be cursing it when you're trying to work out how to access the DVD's special features.
But persevere and the quality of this DVD surpasses even the best VHS players. The vision is crisp, colours are vibrant, and the sound is very detailed. It plays rental DVD's from my local very competently. You'll forget about this players draw-backs and enjoy the extra-clarity of the films dialogue and background effects. Either that or it'll make a bad film even more unwatchable.
This would be money well spent if it was £150. But for £100 (or even £80 ex-demo) its a steal. For this modest sum it makes the film more enjoyable than blurry VHS.
Buy It.
