Advantages: Cheap, Plays everything, Decent performance
Disadvantages: No Scart lead
The CyberHome CH 400 DVD Player is available for £50 from http://www.whsmith.co.uk/WHS/Go.asp?isbn=CHDVD400& DB=622 You get them to deliver it to your local branch of WH Smiths for free, or pay extra for delivery to your home. There are a lot of cheap DVD players around. What marks this one out is 1. Its £50. You also get £1.80 worth of WH Smith points 2. It plays lots of stuff. There is a simple hack to make it multiregion, including RCE-encoded region 1 disks. It plays music CDs, video CDs, MP3 music files or JPEG images on a CD, DVD-R's etc. Some people say it has macrovision disabled, so that you can record from a DVD onto a video cassette. Others have found this isn't so - it might depend on the batch you get. 3. Its small. You don't get a display on the front of the unit, but the box is only 225mm x 240mm x 60mm (W x D x H) which makes it the same size as a lot of micro HiFis. 4. The sound and picture quality are fine. You might get better if you pay a lot more, but reviews I've seen say its as good as anything else up to ~£100-£150. 5. It plays NTSC DVDs on old PAL TVs. If your TV plays PAL at 60Hz, then this is fine. If it only plays PAL at 50Hz it might be a bit jumpy as the DVD player converts it. The only downside I can think of are that you need to buy a scart lead separately. Wilkinsons sell decent shielded ones for £4.99.
