I think I bought this portable DVD player about a year ago.
I wanted something that would play DivX files off of a USB stick.
This seemed to fit the bill so I bought it.
First off, it looks good. This is not too much of a priority for me but it's a nice bonus. The outside is like a nice piano black (which does seem to attract fingerprints and dust) and the inside is black and white.
The screen rotating feature is a nice touch if you plan to use this in a car. The screen can basically be rotated 180 degrees and bent back on to the main body. Instead of having the bottom hanging off a headrest, because of this mechanism you can have one whole body, where only the screen is visible. There is a panel of play, pause etc on the screen itself so this makes it a very neat feature for people planning to use it in a car. It is sturdy and well constructed so there shouldn't be too many worries about over-using the swivel mechanism.
Picture quality is good. I only have my old Phillips one to compare it to and it is alot better than that. This screen definitely provides an adequate quality. It is also a hard plastic screen and not the soft LCD type, so no worries about your little ones touching the screen and possibly damaging it.
There are two headphone sockets which is useful for plane journeys. Also included is a TV-out socket and relevant cable to allow you to connect the unit to the TV. As you're able to view photos, DivX movies and listen to music off the USB port, this feature is excellent as it turns the player into a nice, compact media hub. You can also watch downloaded films/TV on your TV instead of having to do it on the PC.
That being said, if you are planning to use it as a photo viewer, be aware that it is quite slow loading photos off the USB, typically taking 1-3 seconds a photo. It might be quicker off a photo CD but I have yet to try this.
I've so far tried loads of avi files played back through the USB port. It has handled all of them excellently, and is yet to display any problems. It is also capable of playing WMV files but this is alot more hit and miss. If you want a portable capable of playing DivX off a USB then this one will more than do the job.
I've even connected a 1TB external hard drive (powered off the mains) and it handled it fine.
DVD playback is as expected, very satisfactory with no real issues.
The battery life is pretty good, you can usually get close to three hours from it.
Also included is a carry bag which does it's job well and is of a good quality. There is also a remote control. It is small and flimsy but works well enough. As it is a portable this will rarely be used anyway, I'd imagine.
This is a good all rounder. I got an excellent price for it but I think it can be had for around sub £100 in various places. If you want a portable DivX player with USB functionality, then this player performs excellently on that front. It has good battery life and is well made and durable. Not to mention it looks good. It can also be run off the mains and used as your main DVD player.
All in all, you get plenty of functionality in a nice, small bundle.
Watch DVDs, photos and listen to music on the move with this LG portable DVD player.
