Philips PET710

I have quite a few issues with this dvd player and they range from major to subtle annoyances. The player has a 7" display which has decent picture quality and it also delivers great sound through the speakers. The packaging comes with an AV cable and an adaptor for the car cigerette outlet, both of which i've had no problem setting ... up. However, also included are the rechargable battery pack and the AC/DC adapter cable which have their own flaws. The battery on full charge is likely to just about last through an hours worth of movie time before needing to recharge again. This can get extremely frustrating when the power cable is not around. Also when charging the power pack becomes uncomfortably hot to the point where it does smell like it's on fire. This might be bearable if the AC/DC cable wasn't doing the same. Of course the true sauna is created by the player itself, i've actually been worried for my DVDs due to the immense heat produced by this thing. The controls of the player are easy to use and much like a normal remote control with simplistic playback options. I guess it works in the sense you get your DVD or CD played but it has a tendancy to get stuck while changing scenes, letting you know with very scratchy whirring sounds. Read the complete review |

Philips DVP5990
by RyanUK
After I bought my first LCD HDTV, I only had devices which connected via SCART (DVD player and streamer), so the TV was really not being done justice. After some research I found that the HD streamers at the time weren't particular good quality and Blu Ray was still expensive, so I decided to just replace my existing DVD player with one ... that had upscaling capabilities.
After a lot of research, I found myself with a few choices: budget DVD players for about £20 but there were a lot more negative than positive reviews, mid range ones for about £50-80 but the feature sets were not always what I wanted and the high end upscalers that cost upwards of £200. As nice as these were, a bit out of my price range.
Fortunately, though, the Philips DVP5990 was one that really stood out from the rest in terms of features. Not only does it upscale DVDs and have a HDMI connection, but can also play back (via USB) DIVX, XVID, mpeg2, mp3 and probably others but I've never tested. The playback is flawless. It does not play HD videos, but this is to be expected for £62 (including delivery). I did not have a problem playing any files or DVDs at all.
I was able to connect a flash drive, external hard disk drives of 2.5" and 3.5". The 3.5" of course needs a PSU, but the 2.5" was able to run off the USB without a problem (although it's not a guarantee for every single brand and model).
A slight problem with it was the fact the full file name was not displayed, only eight characters, so I had to rename all my files to this length before connecting the usb HDD up to the DVD player. Not too much of a problem as it took just a few seconds.
Otherwise, no problems at all. Quiet, easy to set up, a comfortable remote and excellent picture quality.
I have now replaced it with a PS3, but have no regrets purchasing it (a bargain at £62 including delivery).
Highly recommend for anyone who is in need of a DVD upscale that also plays DIVX/XVID and has a USB connection. Read the complete review |

Philips DVP3005

I cannot believe that you can still buy this player, but after careful consideration it shouldn't come as a surprise. I have owned the Philips DVP3005 since February 2006 and can say without question it has been one of the easiest, most reliable pieces of kit I have ever purchased.
First of all, a couple of tech details. It ... has progressive scan which doubles the vertical resolution resulting in a noticeably sharper detail. Supports most dvd types, although there have been reported problems with dual layer dvd-r discs. Despite what the box says it is multi-region with the help of a handy code. (Press Eject, System Menu, Go To Preferences, Press 135566, Press Down on the Region Code Menu to display 0, System Menu, Standby.) It is very sleek as well, measuring only 37mm in height and comes in silver. Parental controls are available as well which makes it a good purchase for a kids room. Also comes with a basic function remote control.
Having owned this and other Philips items, I can testify to their bulletproof reliability. This model of DVD player has been used extensively over the past five years without a hitch at it still looks as good as the day it was bought in terms of the picture and the physical condition of the unit. True DVD has been overtaken by Blu-Ray and with most perople now heading in that direction it would seem a little pointless buying one new, however at the price these units are going for I would certainly recomend it as a good purchase for kids rooms or just for backup.
