Advantages: great quality picture & sound
Disadvantages: price of DVDs
A lot of people say why go to DVD, for a start the DVDs are a lot more expensive than normal Video's. People have also said, why do I need the extra features than come with DVD, I did without them before when I watched normal videos. Plus the majour difference you can't record them at a reasonable price like of normal VHS videos. I suppose this it was like when CDs first appeared in the 80s, every thought whats the point. You can't record onto CDs they are expensive and so are the players. Anyway, in the short time I have had my DVD Player it has shown me of the advantages of the format. For a start the picture quality is good for all the DVDs you play, unlike VHS where you have to fiddle around with the tracking. There are so many options for video and sound output on the back of the player you are spoilt. There is digital and analogue outputs for both sound and the film. These can go to your TV, Sterio (as long as you have the connections). There is also a SCART socket to connect both the sound and video to the TV. The remote control that you get with the DVD Player is a bit confusing, but after a while (and reading the manual) it is quite easy to use, much like a remote for Digital TV. The DVD Player that I have was realy easy to setup, no need to read a confusing manual. As soon as you turn the player on the TV will change to the channel that you can view the film on. The extra features that you get on DVDs are most of the time worth seeing. A lot of them give you more background to what the film is about and if you are interested in how the film was made. Also if you are interested there are on many DVDs Directors comments on the current scene. Also as with CDs it is easy to skip to the next track (scene) and it is also easy to fast forward. Also with this DVD Player if you stop the film half way through, when you start up the player again it will start the film from where it was stopped. The only p
roblem that DVD Players have in getting more populour is not the price of the actual players, the prices for them are not too bad. It is the prices of the actual DVDs that is setting DVD back in becoming more populour. However you can find cheap DVDs out there, you just have to loo a bit harder. Although they may seem to be expensive, I am sure that the price will come down as they become more wide spread. This DVD Player cost me £180 from www.letsbuyit.com, but you may find i cheaper else where... but probably not in high street store.

- 25/03/01 Well put. I have taken a lot of flack over the years for being among the first to get some new piece of technology - "CD's? They'll never catch on etc" I avoided Betamax, but only by the toss of a coin! You're right about the DVD software costs though, although www.play247.com helps - none of your fancy £20 prices there. It annoys me that films that earned their corn for the film companies years ago still cost full whack. High Noon? £20? Do me a favour, Mr Distributor |
