Advantages: Great picture quality
Disadvantages: Not that cheap
When I heard that Pioneer had released a new DVD player to take over from the excellent DV-717 I was pretty excited. I had been very happy with the 717 but as I was kitting out a new room with AV equipment the DV-737 was the obvious choice. I hunted around on the net and found that it had got good reviews, found a site selling it at the right price, and bought it. I was not disappointed! The 737 is not a DVD player for people who are on a tight budget. It is a player for people who want a quality picture and an excellent sound output. When I say output that is exactly what I mean. The 737 does not have built in decoders so that you can plug 5 speakers straight into it. It does however have two digital outputs so that you can connect it to your AV Amplifier. The first difference I found compared to the 737 is that the DVD spins up a lot quicker. It takes the player a very short amount of time to decide what disk you have put in and (if its a DVD) start playing it. Setting up the 737 is very easy. The on-screen menus are more intuitive than the previous model and this makes the whole set up process a lot less hassle. The quality of the playback is excellent. The picture that I get on my 41" Widescreen rear projection TV is excellent. The built in Virtual Surround does make it sound like the sounds are all around you, just from your normal TV speakers. Obviously it is no substitute to real 5.1 speaker action but it is pretty good. TrickPlay has been added so you can now scan in both directions a lot better than before. This coupled with a newly designed remote makes scanning through titles a lot easier. There are many features with the DV-737 that I haven't got to use yet. There are filters to sort out the 'noise' that you get in the picture of some of the more badly manufactured DVD's. There is the progressive scan facility which is meant to improve the pi
cture quality on sets that can take it. This is just a couple of examples. My DV-737 has been modified so that it plays all regions. Nearly all the online shops will supply them modded for you. This does invalidate the manufacturers warranty but decent shops will give guarantee the player for a year anyway. In summing up the DV-737 is an excellent piece of kit that is meant for medium to high end AV set ups. The build quality is good and it is by a brand that you can trust. If you like what you have heard about the 737 I suggest you go and see one before you buy. Most decent AV shops should have one in and they are not to know that you are really going to bye on-line and save yourself a packet ;) The main problem I had before buying was what colour to get. The Gold or the Black? I decided on the black. Which will you choose?
