Advantages: cheap, good quality, good instructions

Disadvantages: colour, its currently got a problem and won't play certain DVD's

I've got one of those widescreen Tosh televisions with the prologic sound and extra speakers connected to a Sky digibox. I had bought some DVD's out of curiousity value and played them on my PC which has a DVD player.

Fancying a DVD player I wondered down to Comet where I saw the Proline player going for a song (£150ish). Whats more it had got rave independent reviews in the Comet newspaper as a budget machine.

What put me off was the a) the colur - my other equipment is black and b) the problems some prople had had with playing certain DVDs - the Matrix being one of them.

Comet had a load of them on sale with re-fitted chips to solve the problem.

I thought about for a week and took the plunge. For a cheap machine it has a good instruction manual. DVD is the dogs wotsists compared with tape. The picture is excellent, sound is good and I am extremely happy with it.

I have since read through reading other reviews that by inserting a Region 1 disk (from the US) and keying in 0123 it allows you to play it. I must admit I struggled with that until I put the disc onto the tray, keyed in the 0123 and hit play. The disc disappeared into the machine and it burst into life. They never tell you these things !!

Gold colour is still off-putting - but is hides behind a frosted glass door in the cabinet so I will live with that !!

PS I understand that the machine was especially made for Kingfisher - unknown manufacturer using good quality components perhaps.

**** Update 14/11/2000

My machine is poorly. It won't play certain region 2 DVD's. My Wife took back a DVD to Comet whereupon she was embarrassed to find that the DVD played perfectly on the same model as ours. Woops !! I am taking the little gold box back to Comet tonight. I will let you know how I fair.

***** Update 30/11/2000

The machine is back from the menders and it will play all the problem DVD's. Howev
er it won't play the limited edition Gladiator disk !! Everything else is fine apart including the main Gladiator disk with the film on it !!

If it doesn't work after the next 2 repairs - I'm due for a new player under Comet's 'No Lemon' policy !!!

*** update 16/12/2000

I've come to the conclusion that there isn't a fault with my player other than it can struggle to play disks with lots of sections. The Gladiator disk mentioned above takes about 20 seconds to load up each 'deleted' scene. Its a pain - but this is what you get for £150+.

This model is no longer on sale - hopefully its replacement has had this irritating fault cured. Other than this - its a cracking machine !!

My other half wants a DVD player but we can't decide which model to buy, this certainly seems in our price bracket!
I have seen this model in Index billed as a managers special for £139.99 so I may be tempted.

I'm reliably informed that this dvd player is internally identical to the Wharfdale. The region 1 disk code is just numbers - you don't need to enter the commas lol. And I agree with you on the colour!!!!
