Advantages: Absolute bargain, very easy to make all regions
Disadvantages: Overheating can cause problems with playback
The Samsung 709 has had a lot of bad press because it failed to play 'There's Something About Mary' (R2) & 'The Matrix' (R1) when first released, which I feel was unfair as Samsung quickly made available a firmware upgrade which solved the problem - the discs now play fine.
People will tell you that the player is cheap - this much is true! Therefore it performs badly - this is certainly not true! I watch a hell of a lot of DVDs and my 709 plays discs (both R1 & 2 discs - the player is made multi region with a simple remote hack) without any problems time and time again. I also own a Panasonic A-110 (R1 only) DVD player (costing £400) and I've had more problems with it than my Samsung!
The Samsung 709 DVD player can be yours for around £200 - an absolute bargain for a multi region player that performs this well!
