Advantages: Small and portable, good picture quality

Disadvantages: Battery drains if you don't disconnect from main unit

There are quite a few things that I always take on holiday with me every year, and to be honest this little gadget is always one of the first things I put in my carry on bag.

It's great for watching a movie or episode of a tv series while you are on a long and boring flight, and is also handy to have when you get there if you are bored or can't sleep or just fancy watching a film.

My Shinco SDP-1720C has the capacity for one disc, has a seven inch TFT screen, an SD/MMC/Memory stick card slot for viewing pictures, TV Tuner support (which is optional) and came with carry case, remote control, car charger kit, mains charger kit and battery. It's multi-region, so it doesn't matter where you bought the discs you can still play them on this.

The Unit

The DVD player unit is strong and sturdy, with a flip top to protect the screen. It has the usual stop, pause, play, skip button to move through the chapters, forward and rewind buttons. There is a lid that flips up to allow you to slot the DVD into place. The battery clips onto the back of the unit and is easily removeable. It has two headphone jacks so you can watch DVD's with someone else (if you want to that is!) which I thought was a neat touch, so you can share the movie without having to share headphones. There is an AV In jack, AV Out jack as well as DC Out 5v and DC In 9v for the charger. It has an SD card slot at the front for viewing pictures which also takes MMC cards and memory sticks, but not SDHC cards as this is a somewhat older model.

The Accessories

This model came with a travel case, car charger, headphones and remote control. I haven't used the remote control though, because the unit is so small and portable I have it quite close to me so I just use the buttons on the player. The car charger is useful, especially if you have kids and are going on a long car journey. The case is decent quality and not too bulky, which I find fits easily into my hand luggage when flying.

I know that there are quite cheap 10inch models on the market now but I feel that this 7inch model is great because of the size issue. The unit measures 19cm in width and 16cm in depth which would fit in a ladies handbag if you didn't want to put it in the carry case.

Fully charged you would expect to get at least 2 hours out of the battery but there is one drawback in that the battery drains itself if you leave it connected to the main unit for any length of time.

It's a great little model for the price - you can still get one of these on amazon for around £85 - and it's great for eliminating boredom when travelling.

Summary: First thing in my carry on bag on long journeys
