"that....under the TV?"
"Oh that....it's my DVD player"
"that's a DVD!"
Welcome to my house, and the conversation that occurs each time someone new sees the Sony F11.
Oh yeah!, it's small! Only just wider than a disc, it's almost as deep as a video. The coolest thing though is that it comes with a special stand so that that the F11 can stand on it's side ala Playstation 2!
OK, enough of the aethetics what of the performance...top marks here too.
Just insert a disc slightly into the slot-loading system and it glides effortlessly into the machine..cool. It kicks into gear almost instantly. Movie quality is EXCELLENT, it really is top notch. As with all DVD players it's always going to look a million times better than a video, but this is really sharp, colours are spot on. Watching things like "A Bugs Life" and "Toy Story", which are totally digital transfers you realise that this quality is BETTER than the cinema!
Sound is also top notch, the player is compatible with all the latest sound systems for movies including DTS (Obviously sound quality depends on lot on your TV, speaker set up and the movie itself!), hook in some good speakers and blow the neighbours to knigdom come!
Loads of options on the F11, on screen graphics are helpful, you can call up virtually any info you might want. You can even see a graphic of the DVD and where the laser is currently reading from and on which layer! The actual disply on the player is a little disappointing it's only really a timer (unless i haven't figured it out yet!), the useful info has to be displayed on screen, and of course you're not going to do that unless you want to ruin the movie! Another drawback is that if the unit is on it's side the display is not easy to read, you have to tilt your head!!!(HMMM I
feel a lawsuit coming on, neck injury anyone! :-))
The remote is an amazing button-fest, so may buttons! Although during the normal play of a DVD you'll only use about 2! It has something called "magic pad" which is basically like a directional pad at the bottom of the control which controls virtually everything. If you have a Sony TV, then the DVD remote can be used for a lot of the functions like volume and channel changing, very handy unless you like carrying loads of remotes about.
Disc access speed is phenominal, it finds scenes so fast! a good example is the X-Men DVD, you can choose to play the movie with the deleted scenes re-inserted into the movie. Now the deleted parts are obviously stored on a separate part of the disc, when you choose this option, the pause while it gets that scene and then returns to the movie is about a second if that (just like a layer change!). On other DVD players, it seems like someone has ejected the disc and put another in, for tha amount of time it takes!
There is no scart socket on the back , just AV, S-Video and an Optical out. NO Scart..OH MY GOD! Don't Panic, it comes with a scart adaptor and this is what I have connected mine to, picture as I've said is awesome!
This is a really well built machine, when you put a DVD in you just know that:
a) it's going to work (some machines don't play all DVD's - be careful)
b) it's going to be great!
This is my first DVD player and I love it!
I purchased mine off the net, and it's multi-region ready, which cost me less than the standard high street region 2 only model. So shop around!
