This is one of the best portable dvd players I have owned. The seven inch display is really clear and bright. The black levels and contrast are impressive for such a little screen. The player also handles fast motion extremely well. I have owned portables units before that have had severe ghosting.
A good feature is the ability to play movies through a usb slot, weather this is from a flash drive or a hard drive. The inclusion of a digital television tuner means that you can access freeview channels as well. Of course this is limited as to whether the area you are in has a good signal. Generally though it performs very well.
The player is what you expect from sony it is very well built. The buttons have a satisfying responsive and tactile feel. Once the lid is down you also feel like the unit is secure and can survive a trip in a rucksack. I have had no problems with skipping whatsoever, playback is super smooth.
The Sony DVP FX740DT is an elegant portable DVD player to look at. The black colour suits it well. Reliablity wise, nothing has gone wrong with it yet. The hinges to pull up and pull down are strong and don't make any noise.
The seven inch LCD display makes picture quality surprisingly bright and colourful. There is a USB socket for playback of photos, movies and music etc. No loose connections, everything seems to work as it should.
It comes with a built in rechargeable battery that I found if used constantly lasted for around four to five hours on a good day. The speaker sound is powerful enough. No, the audio isn't home cinema quality but it has clarity and you can hear the highs and lows well, with a little bit of bass and treble chucked in for good measure.
One of it's best features is the digital TV tuner. It comes with a portable anntena that I've used in several different places and the quality is outstanding. No reception problems or fizzy picture quality.
A downside is when I switch it on it goes straight to the DVD screen rather than head to where I last was. This can get annoying sometimes if I'm trying to configure the options and have to switch it off several times while doing this to save battery. Compared to the advantages, this system has very little downsides, and is a perfect portable entertainment system.
