Advantages: Build quality, Ease of Use, Reliability

Disadvantages: Region 2 Only, Drive mechanism a little noisy

When first starting out in Home Cinema I knew relatively little in terms of the different hardware available. Rather nievely I assumed one player would be just as good as another - how wrong I was!

I opted to go for the Sony 535 through neccesity more than anything else to be honest. I acquired the player around the time many players were having difficulty playing DVD's such as 'Gladiator' and 'Toy Story Ultimate Box Set'. Out of about 5 different brands of players I experimented in, this was the only player to handle these discs!

Many people know the Sony brand through VCR, walkman ect. and expect a high standard of product from them - the 535 is no different. Built to a high standard, it is relatively easy to set up, so even the most novice of user will have little difficulty getting up and running.

However, there are also a wealth of set-up options, including those for callibrating sound setup for an external amplifier.

Outputs consist of an optical out for Digital sound, as well as S-video,Scart and composite out connections to your TV. The player also contains a dolby digital sound decoder - giving a much sharper sound to film.

The remote control is easy to use, with the added functionality that the remote can also control the majority of Amplifiers and televisions - meaning you won't have a clutter of remote controls around you!

I've owned my player for around 8 months now and not had a single problem with it - all of my DVD's have played without fault and I don't regret buying it for one second.

The only downside to this player is that it cannot be modified via the remote control to play Region 1 (i.e. USA) DVD titles. A chip would need to be fitted to do this, but nowadays that can be done relatively easily and at little extra expense.

All in all I'd recommend that you seriously consider looking at this player if you're thinking of ei
ther buying your first DVD player or upgrading your current system.
