Advantages: Small size, price, features and settings, reliability, plays a wide variety of files

Disadvantages: Blacks not great on my TV, might not be player;s fault. Lip-sync issues

This is a reliable little machine. I say little because it is tiny in terms of depth. I was really surprised by its size- usual 43cm wide, slim height OK, and oh it only goes back about 15cm somehow. It may be small but it is a good little player.

If you have a HD ready TV and want to see what upscaled DVD looks like this is a good bet. It has a lot of options about resolutions and formats so you can find one that works well with your TV. I found component gave better dark for me.

The remote is very similar, if not identical, to the vast majority of all Sony DVD players making it easy to get to grips with. One thing I really love about Sony DVD players is their ability to fast forward and rewind incredibly fast and this one does it well.

Sometimes the lip sync is off, particularly noticeable with DTS soundtracks but I don't know if this is my TV or HIFI causing a delay. You can adjust audio/video sync to more or less compensate for this anyway.

The picture over HDMI is very good indeed. It does show up a poor quality disc though so you could say it's not very forgiving.

Outputs include coaxial digital and HDMI which are the only two I ever use, the sound quality is great hooked up to a surround system. It also plays DivX and MP3 which could be useful although I tested it I don't use it really.

Sometimes black areas of the picture can look slightly dodgy- going to purple or green squares but again I don't know if this is the player or my TV and it's no way near as big a problem as on the up-scaling Denon I had before this which cost twice the price!

Summary: A good entry level upscaling DVD player which gives you a lot of features for your money
