Sony DVP S335 ... players to be the same size as the VHS machines they're supplanting. In fact, since almost all DVD owners also have a video as well, it makes sense for DVD hardware to be as slimline as possible so that the space under the TV isn't completely clogged with boxes. Sony's DVP-S335 has taken this thinking to heart. Feasibly, you could rest it on top of your video under the TV and still have room for the essentials of modern life like an amp or the cable/satellite box. The S335 replaces the older S325, and fulfils the same role in Sony's DVD range - to provide a quality entry-level player that can handle additional hardware as its owner upgrades. The basic outputs provided are more than enough to let new owners plug and play; the two SCARTs (one of which allows RGB signal output) and S-Video socket both give excellent results, and if your TV is really bottom-of-the-barrel stuff there's a composite video plug as well. Even if you're limited to basic stereo sound, a subwoofer socket has been added just to give that extra bit of punch to the audio. Running through the standard stereo outputs, the S335 actually provides very good sound even without additional help. Like many players in this price range, it features a virtual surround option (called VES in this case) which does a reasonable job of simulating additional speakers. However, where the S335 takes off is when you connect up a genuine surround system. It offers DTS as well as the usual Dolby Digital 5.1 via both coaxial and optical, and, it has to be said, does an exceptional job with both of them. While it might not be quite up to the standards of something like a Denon, it is several hundred pounds cheaper, and the only complaints it will generate will be from your neighbors. The picture quality of the S335 is actually an improvement over its predecessor. The S325 wasn't bad by any means, but it had some minor flaws. These have been fixed in the S335; even if you're using nothing more than the composite output the picture is strong and sharp, with good color reproduction. Switch to an RGB output and you get rock-solid results that certainly wouldn't look out of place on a player costing a lot more money. The player is easy to use, with Sony maintaining the simple 'Magic Pad' setup system from the S325. One change is that several functions (like Shuffle and A-B Repeat) can only be chosen from within the Display menu rather than directly from the remote. This might seem awkward, but realistically, how often does anyone use A-B Repeat? No fiddling around with codes on the remote - just put in a new disc and away you go. The S325 was a good, basic player. The S335 is better. It's an evolution of the older machine, and as such is well worth the money. It may be lacking in bells and whistles, but for no-messing DVD playback it's an excellent choice.

The images are watchable if not quite up to cinematic quality. If you have a projector spend more - much more! The sound can only be described as typical (which means quite good). It has a warm balance but does struggle with dialogue in loud passages. Good value but perfectionists or gadget freaks may want more. ...more

Premium Review Sony DVP S335: Sony 336 (110 words)

I returned a Tosh-2109 and bought the Sony 336 a few days later. I found the player alot better personally, and was extremely impressed with the picture. Admittedly i dont have the AC3 sound system to test it, but one day... :) The player comes in a sleek looking silver box. There are all the basic DVD functions, except no zoom, which is nice to have, but not a major problem, as it is more of a novelty. I managed to pick it up for 310 multi-region when it first came out, look around now though and its going in the sub 300 bracket. Definitely recommended. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Fantastic DVD Player at an even more fantastic price! (257 words)

When I started looking for a DVD player a year ago (April 2000), I was looking for a slimline, robust, high quality player that would not break the bank. That is exactly what I found with the Sony DVP-S335. As soon as I laid eyes on it in the store I knew I had to have it. After discussions with the sales assistant and a quick demo the credit card came straight out! I was so impressed with the quality. I was only worried about one thing - will the quality be as good on a bog standard 15" TV? Yes, oh yes it was! I didn't realise such a crappy TV could display such fantastic quality images! I really was pleased with my purchase. This DVD ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Sony DVP S335: DVP-S336 is fantastic! (100 words)

The DVp-S366 is a sleek stylish DVD player finshed in silver to match the Wega tv range. Setting is up for playback was very easy with S-VHS and Scart connections. The picture quality is very sharp, and the on screen display makes navigating DVDs and configuring the sound very easy. The unit does not have a Dolby Digital decoder built in but its is easy to connect to a DD amplifier eg Yamaha DSP5 using a coax cable. It is excellent value for money and is well worth paying the extra £40 to get it converted to multiregion. Well done Sony! ...  Read the complete review

Admittedly i have high standards so take opinions below as you wish: The Sony certainly looks the part and i was as taken in as anyone but the relative merits of this player only became apparent on watching The Mummy. Although the picture is much better than the first generation of players it still suffers from a lack of detail and contrast in dark regions. That said it handles the sand grains in The Mummy very well producing a very stable, watchable image. The images are watchable if not quite up to cinematic quality.
