Advantages: performance, build quality
Disadvantages: none
I have been a fan of home cinema for 5 years now. The moment i was shown a dvd in all its glory i was hooked its as simple as that. I allready owned a dvd player this being the pioneer 919 dvd/laserdisc but with the end of laserdisc player manufacturing i decided that i would really like to use the pionner for laserdisc playback and have a stand alone dvd player to handle the new format. I opted for a multiregion sony 725 and to say i am impressed is well a understatement. As soon as the player comes out of the box you get the feeling that this is a very well made piece of equipment , it feels very solid and weighs quite a bit compared to other players i have seen. This is obviously a good start and things just get better again once you have hooked the player up to the tv and fired up a disc. Connection options are very good on this player with 2 scarts (1rgb) 1 svhs and also component outputs which will come in handy if you happen to have a viewing device that can take advantage of them. The 725 also comes with onboard dolby digital decoder and will pass a dts bitstream to a external decoder. Picture and sounds are superb and i cannot find one single fault it is that good. Playback of audio cds is also excellent and i have read reviews that state that the 725 gives the audio performance of a £300-500 cd player!!. As i write this review the 725 has been replaced by the 735 . The main difference is the 735 has a onboard dts decoder but i am told that the audio playbakc on music cds is now not as good so maybe this should be taken into account. I would recommend this player if you can find one new then that would be great but perhaps there are some bargain second hand ones to be had .
