Advantages: Well, it's cheap!

Disadvantages: Too unreliable

Alright, lets get something straight before I crack on with this review. The old cliche of 'you get what you pay for' has never been more appropriate than when applied to a 'budget' generic brand dvd player and, boy, this certainly rings true with this player.

First thoughts then. Well, to be frank, it looks pretty grim. The only place you would want this is in the spare room. Black, cluncky and cheap looking, this player should NOT be found perching next to your state of the art HD ready plasma screen. The problems continue with the build quality, something which the Tevion brand continues to suffer from. The buttons feel unresponsive and loose. The eject button takes seveal presses before the disk tray finally responds.

Playing ability is best described as average, with an okay range of colours and blacks. Again sound is nothing special as you would expact from a player of this price.

There are plenty of connections on offer via optical, scart and the usual 5.1. VCD, MPEG, SVCD and MPEG 3 are all catered for if required (pretty standard these days anyway.)

However, heres the main concern with this unit. And its a BIG issue. The reliability of this unit is dreadful. It seems to play when it feels like it, and suffers stuttering at the start of any DVD played. This has occured on a couple of Tevion players I've had including the better looking 1200 model and recent 8001 HDMI unit (avoid at all cost- this one refused to play DVDs after just 5 months, although I got a full refund via warrenty.)

I really dont see the point in buying this unit, or for that matter any other TEVION player that you might be tempted to buy (29 quid for an HDMI player is FAR to good to be true!) The build quality and reliability is just too poor to consider them anything but an emergency player at best. To be fair, at this price you could buy and when it goes wrong, get a full refund like I did. A 3 year warrenty is pretty much un-heard of on item like this, it just depends if you can deal with the hassle.

Summary: Yes, It was too good to be true.....

The cheaper DVD players are way better because they are most likely to play rentals.
