Toshiba SD 1010
Advantages: It is easy to install and it does seem light in weight
Disadvantages: The sound and problems playing certain discs
A few weeks ago my DVD player sadly decided to stop working altogether and I needed to buy a new one.
I searched a local store near me and found the Toshiba SD 1010 DVD player for just £25 and at first it seemed very cheap for a DVD player but I thought I would take the plunge and purchase the product anyways.
When I got it home the first thing I noticed was how light in weight the product was. Compared to other DVD players I have had in the past this one weighed in at 1.2kg which is quite light considering and it fitted straight inside my cabinet with ease.
The product itself is very nicely designed. You have this lovely piano black and you have on the front panel some buttons which you would expect to see. You have the power button which is not a huge round button but a smaller and slimmer button which is hidden well.
You have the play button and stop button as well and a nice LCD screen which displays text for your own information about what the DVD player is doing such as loading.
When it came to installing the DVD it was so simple I just put a scart cable which was included in the box into my television and instantly there was my DVD player menu coming up.
This DVD player appealed to me firstly because of the name of the brand which is Toshiba and I have had countless products from that brand before and found they offered excellent quality.
There are some problems with this DVD player though which began to show up a few weeks ago I had made my purchase. The first was when it claimed on the box to be able to play home movies. I am forever recording football games and my relatives messing around and putting them onto a disc.
Normally when I put the disc into any DVD player they work fine but with this player it seemed they would work and then skip many minutes and play again and do the same shortly afterwards. This was the same situation on many types of different discs it was meant to be able to play.
The second fault was when you put in a disc into the player you have the list of contents pop up and you have a nice little box which shows a clip of the movie or whatever you are watching. This is all good as it gives you a sneak preview but it shows around 5 seconds then it stops so if you wanted to find a particular scene you might not be able to work out where it is with the preview clip going so quickly.
The third problem is the control. Without the remote control you cannot skip scenes in a movie, you cannot fast forward or rewind a scene and you cannot display a menu if you wanted to pick a particular movie on a disc. Everything is done by the control which is nice to see but the biggest issue is that if you lose the control you are going to struggle to watch any sort of discs at all.
The remote itself is cute and small and all buttons are very nicely done with clear symbols on them and the more important buttons coloured blue to show they control what is going on with the disc.
Most people will claim for the price you cannot grumble at the fact it has to use a remote and has a few problems but for me that is a problem. Regardless of price you should be able to watch what the product tells you it can do.
I did take the DVD player back in exchange for a new one of the same make and again within a few weeks it began to have the same issues.
On a few of my discs I noticed some scratches and this was from the DVD player because when it struggles to load a new scene from a disc it tends to spin the disc inside really quickly as you can hear it and when it comes out after you find scratches.
The sound I also feel struggles with this DVD player as well. When I watch movies on my more expensive DVD player the sound is excellent and with this product the sound is much lower and not that great and this might be because sound is done in stereo format.
In terms of the size which is 33m (w) 43mm (h) and 20.9mm (d) you have a decent sized player and it weighs hardly anything so that is some of the good parts. However, with all the negative parts this DVD player is cheap for a reason and I would not recommend others making the same error I did.
If you want a cheap DVD player which gives you a movie but hardly any decent sound or preview clips then this might suit some people.
Summary: A cheap DVD player with many faults
