Advantages: Keep your collection of DVDs, well priced
Disadvantages: Poor blacks
The Toshiba SD 480 upscales normal DVDs into a much better format that can be watched on a HD ready TV, it is an alternative to the blu-ray and HD dvd players out there, and allows people to keep their current DVD collections and still watch them all in HD.
The quality of the player is very good, it plays many movies in a much better quality, the only trouble that I have had so far has been with blacks on the player, which often come out in a fuzzy and distorted focus. It is the only fault with the picture quality of the player, otherwise everything about the quality is very good, and I have been pleased with the quality.
The HD output means that DVDs can be played and upscaled on very big HD ready tvs in the highest quality possible, this is a massive bonus and I have really enjoyed being able to use all of my DVDs in this way, it makes the experience more enjoyable.
The price is the best feature here though, for about £50, you could get your hands on one of these upscalers. Compared with the typical £200 asking price for a Blu-Ray player, this is not bad going at all. THe quality will not be as good as Blu-Ray, but the price justifies this.
Overall, this particular player does the job it was meant to very well, and comes competitvely priced. I would not recommend it though, because after a while the quality of blacks does become very annoying, and ruins some movies, so this just scrapes four stars.
Summary: A good upscaler, but nothing special
