Advantages: Cheap, excellent picture and sound

Disadvantages: Incompatibilty with some disks

I decided a couple of months ago to purchase a DVD player after months of being jealous of my brother who has a Sony. Not being the richest person in the world I decided to buy the Wharfedale 750 from Tesco after seeing reviews on it in DVD magazines who gave it top ratings in its class. And I have to say they are right! The picture quality and sound is as good as my brothers Sony player. The menu is a bit 'tacky' (very ZX81 looking!) but then once you have decided on your settings, you shouldn't have to go back to it.

But, there is a cautionary tale here as well. I purchased the Gladiator DVD recently because I had seen it at the cinema and it was probably one of the best films I have seen. There are two DVDs in the box, the second disk has all the special features. BUT it won't work on the Wharfedale, not just mine but ANY Wharfedale. It is a problem that they know about. And to their credit, they told me that they will be putting the problem right in the very near future either with a replacement disk or a modification to all players.

So the moral of the tale is that basically you are getting what you pay for. Don't get me wrong it is an excellent machine and I am very happy with it but I wouldn't imagine somebody owning a more expensive machine having problems with incompatibility with a particular DVD.

Just an update on my previous comment about Wharfedale attempting to correct the Gladiator disk problem. I have recently received an e-mail from them asking me to return the 2nd disk for replacement. So it seems this may have been a disk fault rather than player fault.

Thanks for that, I am planning on getting both the Wharfedale 750 and The Gladiator DVD in January, I'm glad you warned me. Thanks a lot!
