If you just want a basic PVR and your not the type to play around with firmware, change hard drives and dvd drives, then other units would probably suit you better. So yes, I quite like the manual! - Manufacturers Website - You can download the recorders manual and find other support materials for it, through Sony s British website here:- http://www.sony.co.uk/support/ You can find it by searching by category - home entertainment -> DVD Recorders ->RDRGX350 . - Any other criticisms worth mentioning? - A few, the first being that the fast forward 30 seconds at a time function doesn t seem to work properly, or didn t for me when I played back a recording on a DVD-R disk. Liteon LVW-5001 ... purchased the Liteon LVW 5001 about a year ago for the sole purpose of a budget method of recording television programs and films, without having to spend a fortune on a harddrive recorded. You get what you pay for really, the quality appears to downgrade slightly (and yes I have checked the settings are at high), though purchasing a gold plated scart did seem ti improve this a little. The sound quality is very good, you wouldn t know by listening to it that it was a copy, it s just let down by the noise on the video file. Philips DVDR7310H ... device is fine, however it is a bit slow, menus are a bit mysterious and I don t like the remote control set of keys and the way they function. Philips really missed out the standard set of keys for standard set of tasks and their colour codes on this remote controller. Things like fast forward is not as good as it could be. It is getting really worse when you are playing a video CD. Philips tried to put good stuff built-in like rough-cutting recorded pictures. I convinced with all sort of input, output wholes and the set is beautifully designed. I have captured some pictures via FireWire.
