Sony RDR-HXD790B ... digital switch over made my trusty video tape recorder defunct, so I bought a RDR-HXD790B a couple of months ago. Like its name, the instruction manual is far from user-friendly (it s a weighty 167 page tome.) I think this is because it can offer a massive amount of features and is compatible with a wide variety of hardware. Unlike its operating manual, the recorder itself is very user-friendly and has a good selection of useful features. It offers the facility to record a whole season in one go and to pause live TV. Toshiba RD 88DTKTB ... bought this Toshiba DVD recorder a couple of months ago for the bedroom. We already had a recorder downstairs (a Sony RDR-HXD710) but we thought we needed another one to allow simultaneous recordings in case we wanted to record two programmes at the same time, as it sometimes happens. We didn t want to spend too much money on the second recorder (the Sony had cost us in excess of £500) so we ordered this cheaper model online from Comet for under £200. As soon as we opened the box, I could tell that the build quality was nowhere near as good as our Sony. It just feels cheaply made and less sturdy. Panasonic DMR-EX79 ... Panasonic DMR-EX79 in essence has the same specifications as the DMR-EX769 only relevant difference is a bigger hard drive; this unit has 250GB of storage space. Other main features are, as before, DVD recording, Freeview tuner, upscaling or HD enhancement and multi-format. So what is different? Well, for a start, something Panasonic call " Intelligent Auto Standby"; means that it automatically goes into a power save mode when you go back to watching TV.
