Advantages: Cheap, records DVDs reasonably well

Disadvantages: Terrible video quality, no digital tuner

The LG DR-7400 is a very simple DVD recorder. It has a single analogue tuner, so can only record from either traditional analogue television or from a Scart or s-video input.

The TV tuner on this recorder is not the best quality; although perfectly adequate for recording, the colours seem washed out compared to the same program viewed directly on the television.

Recording from other sources sadly produces a similar washed out picture.

DVD playback is similarly flawed... DVDs usually start playing as soon as the disk is inserted, from the first chapter of the first title. This is handy - you can skip all the marketing bumpf and piracy warnings - but typically flawed; most DVDs start up in the wrong language and with subtitles playing.

Fortunately I got this device free with my TV; I would certainly not recommend it to anyone as a DVD recorder.

If you want a DVD recorder, buy one with a built in digital TV receiver - anything else will be redundant by 2012. If you can afford it, buy one with a hard drive too; it's about 100 times more convenient.

Summary: Don't bother - buy a more modern one with digital TV
