***What is it***
The LG DRT389H is a dvd player with upscaling function, dvd recorder and freeview box all incorporated in one easy to manage stylish sleek unit.
The unit is suitable for anyone who wants to copy from a non copyright protected source (sky's box office movies are non recordable due to copyright) I myself bought this to record of my sky box so i could have extra space for more recordings. So this will record from anything will a scart output (vcr, dvd player etc).
The set up of this was very easy with different recording qualities to give you longer/shorter recording times (though the more you lengthen the recording time the more the picture quality degrades). The recordings were very easy to set up and were also easy to edit and title. The dvd upscaling is great for upgrading standard definition discs into high definition quality and the usb port comes in useful if you want to watch something that is on your computer on your tv, in this case you can transfer it to a usb stick, put it in this slot, select usb on the playback function and it will playback through the dvd recorder.
All was going well until one day probably 2 months after purchase it broke down...it still lit up but would not function for recording and the screen would stay frozen. So it was tested and a new one sent out to me.....then a month later the same thing happened and i had to go through the return process again. Now three months later dvd playback functions intermittently, you have to unplug it from the mains power it on again for it to read a dvd otherwise it just keeps trying to read the disc but will not play it. I have tried it with many dvds...all the same unless you unplug it. In total i have only 30 recordings made by this unit so its not been overused in anyway.
I have tested the freeview fuction on the dvd recorder though i do not need need it as i have built in freeview on my tv but it works perfectly fine with easy to navigate menus.

If this player was reliable i would have given it 5 stars for quality of recording, ease of use and setup. However with the amount of problems i have had with it i could not in good conscience recommend this to anyone else. Disappointment coming from a big brand like LG
So after what has been an eternity,I picked one of these up from Tesco, and so far I'm impressed. Costing a little under £125, it's a fairly compact entry level DVD recorder for those who like technology without hassle.
Opening up the box, you will find it comes with the unit itself, a remote control plus battery, RF cable, AV cable and the all important instruction booklet. Finished in a glossy black plastic on the front, with matte metal on the other four sides, it measures 430mm x 49mm x 245mm and weighs a little under 2.6kg.
As standard now with most items of this nature it comes with DV and USB connections, so you can plug your camcorder or camera in. It has the feature of recording upto 21 hours of programmes onto a single disc. However as with VHS and SP/LP the quality declines in stages from high to goo to average.
It also has a built in freeview reciever although this is mostly redundant as most TV's are now coming with at least this and in some cases FreeSat or HD. The dvd can also upscale dvd's to a superior quality although not Blu Ray level.
The main benefit of this item and the reason I purchased it was twofold. Firstly you can connect it to an old VHS recorder and convert tapes to DVD. The quality is that of VHS of course but it's handy for stuu you've recorded and cannot obtain on DVD. Secondley, this is an absolute godsend for getting stuff off your Sky+ box. It is a little complicated to hook up of course and their will be wires everywhere but it's worth it in the long run. A word of warning, you will need access to the internet and an AV forum for a bit of help here. Secondley, the unit records what is on screen, so if you're moving stuff from your Sky+ box then do it before going to bed and leave it running.
If I was to make one complaint, then it is the instructions are a little thin, but with internet access there are plenty of resources out there to offer assistance. The unit is practical and once you get the hang of it you'll wonder what you did without it, and as such I would recomend this to anyone.
This is the best DVD recorder going it does what it says, good picture quality and sound, it also has built in Freeview and is very easy to use and set up. I have linked this to my LG TV Video to copy VHS to DVD and it works a treat.
There are even controls for LG TVs on the DVD remote so you dont have to use the TV remote. There is a USB port so you can plug in an usb flash pen or external hard drive look at Jpeg pictures or play back Mp3 or wma files even DIVx and AVI files copied from a PC.
I'm even playing Tomb Raider The Action Adventure and classic 80s video game Dragons Liar DVDI Video on it. If your looking for an all round player recorder with Freeview the LG DRT389H is a must buy product I highly recommend it.
I bought this DVD Recorder with built in Free-view from Littlewoods for £149 on buy now pay later.
It is a smart looking player/recorder and it only took 10 minutes to set up and install all the digital/free-view channels. I have recorded on DVD -R, DVD -RW, DVD +R, DVD +RW without any problems. The built in tv guide is easy to understand and you are able to select a programme to record by pressing a coloured button, where you have a list of recording options, One option, is that you can set it to record a series. It even recorded a whole programme, which was running approximately 10 minutes late. You can also record now, just by pressing the record button. The picture and sound quality is brilliant. For the price, there are plenty of features, like HD Upscaling, but can't test this as I don't have a HD TV. I found the User Instructions easy to follow. Navigating Audio CDs and Picture CDs is also easy to do, plus it is also easy to edit track titles on DVD -RW and DVD +RW. Will certainly recommend it to friends.
