Liteon LVW-5002 DVD Player

I have had this DVD player now for a couple of years and I think I am stuck with it until I can get the funds together to get another one. I have been disappointed with this player since day one and I wish I had returned it as soon as I realised how rubbish it truly was.

I bought it from Curry’s as I say a few years ago when the recordable DVD player first came out. I paid £180 for the machine with remote control and this price was pretty much the cheapest I could find for a recordable DVD player at that time. I think you can pick them up for probably about half the price now.

The DVD player really looks the part and is a lovely silver and mirror design. The player looks very flash and the mirrors on the box hide the part where you put in the DVD disc. There are few buttons on the outside of the box such as the on/off button, play, stop, record and pause buttons are also featured but as time has gone on these have become less reliable to use. Sometimes the buttons don’t seem to register at all and I have to turn the whole box off from the mains and restart the thing.

The remote is rather large and not one that will be lost easily. There are loads of buttons and to be honest to this day I still don’t know what some of them do. The remote is grey in colour and does not look nearly as flash as the player does. The remote offers all the usual buttons such as the play, stop record buttons but there are also buttons here to get you to the set up of the player and the set up of how the thing works. The whole menu screen is pretty basic and very easy to move around. I didn’t even read the instructions before getting the hang of these menu options.

The main feature that attracted me into buying this DVD player was the ability to record from the television onto a blank DVD. This is the feature that at this present moment does not work at all. At first I was able to record easily from the telly but the quality of the DVD that was created was very poor with crackling sound and a very blue screen to watch.

The process of actually setting up the player to record was very simple and once you have put in the blank disc it is literally the case of pressing the red record button on either the remote or the player itself. There are options that you can choose to set the DVD to record in chapters and you can continue to record on one DVD until it is full or you can seal the DVD so nothing else can be recorded onto or over the thing you have previously recorded.

The ability to play DVD’s i.e. films is also very easy to use and is basically done by putting the DVD waiting for it to load and it will play automatically. However I have found the player has got noisier and noisier to the point where it is now actually impairing the sound quality from the DVD you are watching.

You are able to watch the TV when you have the DVD player turned on and this is where you can record. The trouble being you really do have to watch what you are recording and I find if you try to record from the Digibox you literally cant watch it at all.

The most recent DVD films that we have been playing have also been giving us trouble. The DVD player seems to go forward chapters and skip back chapters when it reaches the end of one. So sometimes it can run seamlessly into the next chapter but you have in fact skipped forward 20 minutes and it can take a little while to realise you have skipped a load of film. This is by far the most annoying aspect of this DVD player now and combined with the poor sound I think I may be giving up watching DVD discs on this player all together soon.

So all in all I think I am going to start saving now for a new DVD player. This one was a total disappointment and hardly worked to a standard that anyone would be happy with. I have been stuck with this DVD player now for a while and I should think I wont know myself when I do eventually get a new player. I would suggest if you are thinking of getting this particular DVD player please don’t even waste the time thinking about it because you will surely be utterly disappointed.

Summary: a rubbish dvd recorder - dont buy it
