Yes, this DVD recorder was cheap. At least relatively in comparison with other like units. I wanted a DVD recorder and didn't want to spend a half a grand to get one. So this was the choice. I'm sorry that I made it. Indeed it was slow in turning on, reading a disc, and had a very lousy response time to the remote (if the remote worked at all). But for the price, it still was recording DVD's, and that was the goal. But not more than 6 months into use it began to become even slower. The normal start up times dragged on and on. Sometimes it would just freeze and you'd power it off and try again. Later that became the tip of the iceberg as the DVD case wouldn't open. The DVD was just locked in the case. Even at this very moment, though no DVD is in the unit, the machine (after 20 minutes of start-up) will say "No Disc" and then refuse to open to allow input of a disc. If you have an interest in buying a DVD Recorder, this unit is obviously not for you. If you see one at a garage sale and are thinking it is a bargin and you've always wanted one, this unit is obviously not for you. If a long lost friend passes away and bequeths this DVD recorder model to you, they obviously weren't that good of friend. If you hear the name Mustek and haven't either ran in the other direction screaming bloody murder or at the very least have jolted the person back into reality, you are making a big mistake. I've learned from my mistake. I hope you will too.
