Advantages: Lots of features, very easy to use
Disadvantages: Long time to switch on
I got this DVD Recorder as a present in Xmas 2007, and was really excited to use it as an alternative to a VCR. When i first started using it i immediatly got frustrated with the long start up time of about 25 seconds. Once i got past the start up its true beauty came out, with easy to use menu's and fantastic dvd playback. You could remove a film from the disc tray mid playback, but it back in an hour later and the disc will restart in exactly the same place as when it stopped, also giving you the option to start playback from the beginning!
Like a VCR recorder you can record what your viewing straight to DVD at the touch of a button, and you can also choose the quality of the recording so you can save more hours of video to disc than normal.
Other features include the ability to pause live TV, save music to the massive hard-drive and edit recorded programs.
The pause live tv function is probably the best feature that the system has to offer. The hard-disk will memorize up to 6 hours of viewing, and you can search through what you have veiwed within that time by either skipping backwards/forwards by 5 mins, rewinding, fast forwarding, or typing a time. For example, If you were to watch BBC1 at 4pm, and at 6pm you watched BBC 2, then at 7pm you could go onto the menu - type in the time 5pm, and what you were watching on BBC1 at 5pm would be showing. Very difficult to explain, and probably difficult to understand, but it really is incredibly easy and useful when put into practice!
Music is very easy to use on the Philips aswel. You can either stream it or upload it off of a CD, MP3 disk, or a usb drive (there is a usb port on the front). Quality is great, and the media copies across pretty quickly too. You can also upload video files in MPEG or DivX format.
It is worth noting that you cannot copy recorded programs onto an external device, to do this you must burn them onto a DVD. This is fairly straightforward to do and rather quick.
Summary: Smart little system, highly recommended for any living room
