The Big Sleep (DVD) ... ... / DVD released 01 June, 2006 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Black & White, Dubbed, Full Screen, PAL / Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall made screen history together more than once, but they were never more popular than in this 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's novel, directed by Howard Hawks (To Have and Have Not). Bogart plays private eye Philip Marlowe, who is hired by a wealthy socialite (Bacall) to look into troubles stirred up by her wild, young sister (Martha Vickers). Legendarily complicated (so much so that even Chandler had trouble following the plot), the film is nonetheless hugely entertaining and atmospheric, an electrifying plunge into the exotica of detective fiction. William Faulkner wrote the screenplay. --Tom Keogh

Premium Review The Big Sleep (DVD): no reason to sleep (1079 words)

First off let me say The Big Sleep looks magnificent in all its DVD glory. The picture is crisp and all those annoying crackling sounds we can remember from the VHS version have gone. So set it up on a big TV, turn off the lights, close the curtains and you?re as close as you?re ever gonna get to seeing it in the cinema without the effort of getting to one (though the effort is certainly worth it). OK, the packaging is kinda ordinary and there are no extras to speak off. But who cares? So many DVDs come with tedious (some odious) straight from US TV plugs that regurgitate all the usual nonsense and are generally nothing better than extended commercials. Anyway, ...

Introduction As a recent convert to the work of writers like Raymond Chandler and James M Cain, when I saw this DVD was going free with a recent Mail on Sunday, I didn't hesitate to get hold of it. This is a re-make of the original film based on Raymond Chandler's work, which stars Humphrey Bogart and was made in 1946. This particular version, made in 1977, was directed by Michael Winner, who apparently took precautions to change the setting of the film, so that it wouldn't be directly compared to the original. I have a copy of the original on video, but unfortunately my video player has broken, so I cannot comment first-hand on the differences. However, I ...

Premium Review The Big Sleep (DVD): The Big Sleep (the good version) (195 words)

I was forced at gunpoint to watch drab black and white films at college... argh. However, The Big Sleep (the Humphrey Bogart version, not the boring 80s version) was not a drag to watch, i absolutely love it and I think you will too...... The story is based on the Book by Raymond Chandler... the Philip Marlow series. It revolves around a family that is being blackmailed, and in the process of the investigation into the affair, several people are mysteriously murdered. Joy. The story seems simple enough but after people start dying here there and everywhere, it all gets terribly confusing. It is difficult to keep track of who is a ...
