Bravo Two Zero (DVD) ... DVD released 18 December, 2001 at Dimension / Features of the DVD: Closed-captioned, Colour, DVD-Video, Widescreen, NTSC / A made-for-TV adaptation of Andy McNab's best-selling Bravo Two Zero--his account of a covert SAS mission in the Gulf War gone wrong. Sean Bean plays McNab, part of an eight-man team dropped behind enemy lines to sever communications lines. Things inevitably go wrong, however, and the team are captured and tortured, before making a variety of daring and amazing escapes. The story on which this film is based is certainly stirring, but it suffers from being generically at odds with the production values of a TV adaptation. The acting is wooden and the budget cannot provide the pyrotechnics or thrilling action sequences which action or war junkies may demand. At some points there are even unsuccessful attempts to blend parts of the staged drama with real documentary news footage. One might argue that the presentation of the SAS team as everyday, emotionally stunted lads, and their mission as gritty, downbeat and devoid of glamour is perhaps quite true to real-life events. It is also a huge novelty to see cinematic acknowledgement of British forces' participation in any conflict occurring in the last century. On the other hand, Bravo Two Zero undoubtedly appears quite dour when placed alongside a more flashy, Hollywood offering such as Three Kings. Nevertheless, SAS aficionados and fans of the novel will enjoy it immensely, if only to look at the way in which McNab's account presents Chris Ryan--author of a drastically different film and novel version of this incident, The One That Got Away--as a posturing, image-conscious coward. The video also includes an exclusive 22-minute interview with the author, Andy McNab. --Paul Philpott

... escape from behind enemy lines with things getting worse as each minute passes. My Thoughts: I purchased this soon after it was shown on TV as I was completely hooked on it; the action, the story just everything about it! As some of you may know this DVD is based on a true story and I had to keep asking myself did this really happen! These guys go through hell and the story is retold so well that your heart will be racing in places. Since watching this I have read the Bravo two Zero book by Andy McNabb and believe tha...more

Premium Review Bravo Two Zero (DVD): Doesn't do the book justice (337 words)

Whilst Mcnab helped in the producing of this film (filmed in an african desert), it just doesn't seem to do the book or the men of the patrol justice. Basically the film is a true story of an SAS patrol behind Iraqi lines in the gulf war. If you want to know more of events read my review of the book, or of another book called The One That Got Away by Chris Ryan, which I have also reviewed. The narration of the book was a good idea, but there was more needed. Their just is no indication of time used, the film makes the whole event of this SAS patrol escape attempt seem to have taken about 2 or 3 days, when in fact it took over a week for most. The ...

What’s the movie about? Bravo Two Zero was produced by the BBC and shown on British TV in 1998. It is a true story set in the early days of the Gulf War (Iraq 1991) and retells the story of an 8 man SAS squad behind enemy lines; their mission was to destroy Iraqi scud missiles launchers and also to cut communication lines. Very quickly their position becomes compromised and they are set back further by equipment failure and bad weather. Deciding to abort their mission they have to fight numerous running battles with a much larger Iraqi army before they can reach the border to safety. Eventually some of the squad are captured and have to endure interrogation and ...

Bravo Two Zero (DVD): I went to the Gulf and all I got was this lousy medal (351 words)

Thanks to blokes like Andy Mcnab, making the Gulf war as terrorfying as possible for the Iraqis by tear arsing it across the desert with little more than a couple of grenades and a sharpened toothbrush, the vast majority of us never had to experience it at first hand. Only six of the original eight who went out a patrol as Bravo two zero managed to make it out alive, their mission was to disable Iraqi communications. They might have managed to wreak havok behind enemy lines, quite possibly making Saddam Hussain sick up his cornflakes in fear and wish he was back in his mothers lap, but what thanks did they get on returning home? I'm gonna tell you.....they ...
