Contact (Special Edition, DVD) ... Jena Malone, David Morse ... / DVD released 25 September, 1998 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Digital Sound, Dolby, PAL, Subtitled, Widescreen / The opening and closing moments of Robert (Forrest Gump) Zemeckis's Contact astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. Contact traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, Contact is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from 2001 to The Right Stuff. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest)reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--Contact is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, Contactdeserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio film making on a personal scale. --Jim Emerson

... novel has been taken to pieces and re-assembled - his story, which includes a far larger number of characters and events, might have been suited to a mini-series but not a 2-and-a-half hour movie as here. Some might object to this, but it's called adaptation, and it's done with the utmost respect here. I think Carl Sagan was involved with much of the movie's making: the only sad thing is that he apparently never got to see the finished film, dying in 1997. This movie eventually led me to read his books an...more

Premium Review Contact (Special Edition, DVD): Make Contact on DVD (419 words)

The Science Fiction genre has recently been flooded with Holywood blockbuter style 'fight the aliens and rescue the planet' style films, so it's nice to see a Sci Fi film that takes a more personal and thoughtful approach to the genre. Contact starts by focusing on one lady, Ellie Arroway, played by Jodie Foster. Starting off as a little girl, Ellie is so interested in space that it leads her to take a job for SETI, listening to radio signals from space for any intelligent signs of life. While her previous collegues think she is doing completely the wrong thing and tell her it's a waste of time, Ellie is convinced that there is something out ...

Released as the film all DVD enthusiasts would love as it is billed as the DVD that is best suited for your home cinema set-up with a great picture an atmospheric soundtrack and plenty of features. When it first came out the shops could not keep up with demand. The movie begins far out in space then it comes back into earth to one young ladies eye. It has been her life long quest to find extraterrestrial life. Contact is based on the great science fiction writer Carl Sagans book of the same name. I don’t want to tell you to much as it will spoil the film but it’s basically about Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) as she fight for financial support to keep ...

THE FILM: The Pedigree couldn't be better. Written by Pulitzer prize winning scientist Carl Sagan, directed by Oscar winner Robert Zemeckis and starring Jodie Foster: CONTACT is the ultimate thinking person's sci-fi. From the spectacular opening shot of galaxy spanning proportions Contact never lets go of the pace. the story is simple yet of complex scientific/religious/philosophical overtones. The Screen play by James Hart and Michael goldenberg successfully adapts the novel to film without losing the tone. It is a tough book to adapt and kudos to the lads. Jodie foster is astronomer Ellie Arroway, a woman with a purpose in life. She wants ...
