The Corruptor (DVD) ... / DVD released 24 January, 2000 at Entertainment in Video / Features of the DVD: PAL, Widescreen / Nick Chen (Chow Yun-Fat) is not your average New York cop. Working in Chinatown has its multifarious cultural nuances and its fair share of ubiquitous enticement, both of which are reflected in detective Chen's weary face. He had to get into bed with the highest echelons of the Chinese Mafia as a way of augmenting his own career, while maintaining a semblance of control over the dime-a-dozen hoods who proliferate on this turf. To make matters worse, he now has to break in rookie detective Danny Wallace (Mark Wahlberg), who has asked to be assigned to the Chinatown division. Apparently Wallace is infatuated with all things Chinese, or is suffering from "Yellow Fever," as his fellow colleagues would have us believe. Chen, not one to suffer fools gladly, takes young Wallace under his protective wing, oft-warning the shady powers of the neighbourhood not to sink Danny into their sordid pool of corruption. But before he knows it, both he and Wallace are caught in a deadly ring of double-crosses, shady-dealings, murders, and car chases. And all of this under the suspicious eye of Internal Affairs. Part Serpico and part Hard Boiled, this film seems at first to be a major departure from director James Foley's previous work. However, Foley has frequently revealed a keen eye and understanding for emotionally complex relationships, especially between teacher and pupil (Glengarry Glen Ross) or father and son (At Close Range). This movie is no different. In fact, Foley's meticulous attention to the relationship between the wise, morally burdened Chen, and the naove, innocent Wallace morphs this otherwise tedious plot into a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Hats off to Chow Yun-Fat and Mark Wahlberg, whose sympathetic chemistry creates an authentic and deeply personal connection, a factor that proves crucial to the film's poignant, disturbing finale. --Jeremy Storey

... superiors send his understaffed department a rookie cop named Danny Wallace played by Mark Wahlberg. The fact that he?s a white cop does nothing to pacify Nick in his new role as babysitter. On the surface this cop film seems nothing out of the norm but with a few plot twists it comes out better than I had imagined and slightly more entertaining than the aforementioned Replacement Killers. It has it?s fair share of action if that?s what you?re looking for and it does contain a violent and above average car chase. Over...more

Sorry to say, `The Corruptor' is a ho hum, strictly by-the-numbers police procedural set in a precinct in the heart of New York City's Chinatown. Chow-Yun Fat stars as the officer in charge of the district, a generally serious and dedicated cop whose corruptibility we see played out as he beds local prostitutes and makes cozy sweetheart deals with a racketeer in the neighborhood. Then in walks Wallace as a neophyte cop, the first white man ever to work in this all-Asian department. The question then becomes: is this new officer (Mark Wahlberg) as corrupt as Nick or is there a secret hidden behind his façade of `green' newcomer? Actually, the story of ...

The Corruptor is one of those action movies that doesn't really have a lot of ideas but is entertaining. Nick Chen (Chow Yun Fat) is one of the NYPD's most decorated officers. But he has used his close ties with the chinese triads to rise up through the ranks. A new young officer Danny Wallace is brought in to partner Chen and soon a turf war is errupting. Chen finds his loyalties divided and of course general guns and ammo with chop socky action ensues. Don't expect much and you should have a good time, this film does have a very good car chase scene but the whole triad thing seems to the main plot point of mnay action movies in recent years. This ...

Starring Hong-Kong action superstar, Chow Yun-Fat, alongside Mark Wahlburg, this has to be one of the best action movies that I have ever seen. The plot is in no way sacraficed for special effects or glorious action sequences (both of which are still abundant), and will suck you in from the first to the last of it's 110 minutes. The plot is centered around police corruption and triad dealings in China town in New York, and is in every way convincing as you would expect. Wahlburg is sucked into the area's seedy underbelly, and there are twists in the tale, but I will not spoil a great movie by giving anything away. The Corruptor also has a car ...
