This is a pretty good comedy that has enough grace not to take itself too seriously which is echoed by the Bollywood style ending to the film that divorces reality with actual events. The film stars Jimmy Mistry plays Ramu Gupta who arrives in New York seeking fame and fortune but ends up working in a restaurant. When he is sacked he tries and fails as a porn star but builds up a relationship with the female lead played by Heather Graham. Whilst at a swanky party where he is working as a waiter he takes over the role of a Guru when the original man doing it passes out from drrinking too much. Ram has dreamt of being a successful actor in Hollywood ever since he saw a performance of Grease when he was a child. When he finally gets to go to America, against his parents' wishes, he finds that it is not all he expected, and he is forced to work in a restaurant to earn a living. After hubby and I decided to spend some more quality time together, he dragged himself away from Football Manager 2001 and went to our local Blockbuster. A phone discussion ensued and we chose two DVDs to borrow – one of which was The Guru. Tearing myself away from BBC News 24, we sat in front of the TV with pots of Ben & Jerry’s and started watching the film.
