Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (DVD) ... Radcliffe, Julie Christie ... / DVD released 24 October, 2005 at Warner Home Video / Features of the DVD: Anamorphic, PAL / Adapted from JK Rowling's third novel, this installment of the family fantasy adventure story finds trainee wizard Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and his best friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint), facing the dangerous convict Sirius Black (played by Gary Oldman). Black has escaped from Azkaban Prison and is on his way to Hogwarts, so the school calls in supernatural assistance in the form of Dementors -- but will they turn out to be a great help or a further threat? The first of the Harry Potter films to be directed by acclaimed Mexican film director Alfonso Cuarón, Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is generally regarded as the most stylised and darkest entry in the series thus far. It stars the actors from the preceding films in the series, except for the role of Albus Dumbledore, which sees Michael Gambon take over from the late Richard Harris. Much of the original crew also returned, including screenwriter Steve Kloves. The film broke several opening records around the world upon its release, including the top opening film in UK film history, and made approximately £20m in its first three days, totaling £90.3m in ten days.

... this film, with one exception. Richard Harris' unfortunate death left the important character of Professor Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts, wide open. This ample void is filled by Michael Gambon, and his portrayal of Dumbledore is very different to that of Harris. I am not keen on Gambon in this role, great actor though he is, as I do not feel he plays the part as well. However, he still does it justice, and this did not detract from my enjoyment of the film too much. There are magnificent performances from Gary Ol...more

Premium Review Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (DVD): Harry Potter's new enemy! Jailbreak at large! (765 words)

The third installment of J K Rowling's Harry Potter series was a great success as a book, and the transition from page to screen in 2004 takes on a dark and twisted turn as newer characters are involved and the past comes into the series. The film is a good one, with another stellar cast and some 'different' direction. The Plot Harry Potter's third year at Hogwarts' School of Witchcraft and Wizardry sees the appearance of a new threat. Harry's enemy and murderer of his parents Lord Voldemort has been the subject of much fear in the previous installments, and his most faithful and dangerous servant, Sirius Black, has escaped from Azkaban, the wizard ...

I decided that in the run up to the release of the DVD of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix that I would review the previous four films and so this is my review of the third of the series Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). A slight aside before I start. When my husband and I first started dating we lived in London and quite often used to go the Prince Charles cinema just off Leicester Square – it used to be £1 to get in and you could take your beer in with you. They didn’t show current releases but they were recent (as well as older or seasonal films or films with a specific theme). One day we’d been shopping (quelle ...

Christopher Columbus; what were you DOING?! Coming along, taking on the massive job of turning a world-famous book series into film and flaming FLUFFING it?! Baaad idea. Bad, bad career move. I hate to say it, but this man ruined the first two Harry Potter films. When he finally scampered off with his tail between his legs (thank God), it was Spanish director Alfonso Cuaron who took over his mantle. With a film as good as ‘Y Tu Mama Tambien’ in his filmography, I was expecting bigger and better things. After seeing ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ in the cinema, and then another ten times or so (so far) both between the cinema and at home on my DVD player, I ...
