Hellboy (DVD) ... ongoing deluge of comic-book adaptations, Hellboy ranks well above average. Having turned down an offer to helm Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in favor of bringing Hellboy's origin story to the big screen, the gifted Mexican director Guillermo del Toro compensates for the excesses of Blade II with a moodily effective, consistently entertaining action-packed fantasy, beginning in 1944 when the mad monk Rasputin--in cahoots with occult-buff Hitler and his Nazi thugs--opens a transdimensional portal through which a baby demon emerges, capable of destroying the world with his powers. Instead, the aptly named Hellboy is raised by the benevolent Prof. Bloom, founder of the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, whose allied forces enlist the adult Hellboy (Ron Perlman, perfectly cast) to battle evil at every turn. While nursing a melancholy love for the comely firestarter Liz (Selma Blair), Hellboy files his demonic horns ("to fit in," says Bloom) and wreaks havoc on the bad guys. The action is occasionally routine (the movie suffers when compared to the similar X-Men blockbusters), but del Toro and Perlman have honored Mike Mignola's original Dark Horse comics with a lavish and loyal interpretation, retaining the amusing and sympathetic quirks of character that made the comic-book Hellboy a pop-culture original. He's red as a lobster, puffs stogies like Groucho Marx, and fights the good fight with a kind but troubled heart. What's not to like? --Jeff Shannon

The return of Rasputin spells trouble and Hellboy and his comrades must stop him before he can complete his evil plans. The supporting cast for Hellboy features Selma ...more

Premium Review Hellboy (DVD): Ah Hell Boy! Ron Perlman and cast live it up underground! (417 words)

As comic book adaptations, Hellboy was always going to be a more 'cult' film rather than a blockbuster. The idea of a little demon growing up to protect the world against creatures that the government would rather keep under wraps is far-fetched, but then so are most sci-fi films once Hollywood gets a hold of them. The Plot In the second world war, scientist Professor Broom stumbles across Rasputin and his troops, including a masked assassin, attempting to open a portal to another dimension. As the portal closes, out jumps a little red demon wth a stone hand. Fast forward to the present day, and the little red demon has grown into ...

There are certain films that you can forgive even though they are flawed. Like one of your kids you prefer to see their positives and pretend that their negatives do not exist. One film that does this for me is 'Hellboy'. It's amazing how much more forgiving I can be to a film that not only contains a 6ft+ tall horned demon, but also an intelligent fish man and a clockwork Nazi. With such interesting ideas and gothic sensibilities the film was seemingly created just for me. Having seen it at the cinema and watched it on DVD several times there was no contest as to what film I would use to christen my new HDTV. Out came the director's cut of 'Hellboy' and on went ...

“Undemanding”. A word that pretty much sums up Hellboy. In fact, if you look up the word undemanding in the dictionary, you might well see a picture of the Hellboy film poster*. “Solid”. That's another word you could use. Oh, and “Fun” is a third one. There you go. Solid, undemanding fun. That's the review pretty much written. Now I just have to sit back and wait for those 3 pences to start rolling in. What's that? You want more? Well, honestly. All right then, just for my favourite Dooyoo readers out there, I'll give you a little bit more detail.. Hellboy was never going to win a place in anyone's “Top 10 Films”. Heck, it would struggle to make it ...
