 Hook (DVD) ... Colour, Dolby, DVD-Video, Widescreen, NTSC / Hook is Steven Spielberg's most spectacular film of the 90s. It is also seriously underrated, arguably the equal of ET, (1982) and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, (1977). An unofficial sequel to J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan, Hook adopts the startling premise of what happened after "the boy who never grew up", grew up. Robin Williams, in his career best performance, is the corporate suit forced to remember he once was "The Pan", returning to Neverland to battle nefarious Captain Hook (a splendid Dustin Hoffman), for his children's love. This is a ravishingly beautiful, stunningly designed film, at once highly imaginative and with a genuinely magical atmosphere which ranges from exquisite, delicate fantasy to slapstick tomfoolery. There is fine support from Maggie Smith, Julia Roberts and Bob Hoskins, and John Williams' rapturously romantic score is yet another career high. Slated upon release, and dubbed a flop though it grossed $200 million, Hook reacted against the "greed is good" 80s by upholding family values and responsibility while evoking a genuine sense of wonder. Only the somewhat pantomime final showdown disappoints, but alongside Legend, (1985)and Labyrinth, (1986), Hook is ripe for reassessment as a fantasy classic. The DVD transfer is superb and the disc, though not packed with additional features, has some interesting extras. --Gary S. The story begins with Peter as a man who takes his family to visit Granny Wendy at the orphanage that he grew up in in London. Granny Wendy tries to remind peter about the fun they used to have in Never never land, but Peter just thinks she is a crazy old lady, he has completely forgotten who he used to be.

The advent of the recent Disney film has, to my mind at least, drawn comparissons with an older Spielberg piece: "Hook". I haven't seen the Disney, but from what I've heard, the plots are quite similar in some ways. The plot: Peter Pan left Neverland when he saw Moira, grandaughter of Wendy. Wendy was running a home for lost boys in London, Peter stayed, forgetting his magical past. We meet him grown up, living in America and busy with business. He has two children - Jack and Maggie, but he doesn't have much time for either. A Christmas invitation back to London takes his fmaily across the pond. I bought the Spielberg edition of Empire magazine on Saturday. I'd never read a film magazine before, but I was going to be stuck at Crewe station for some time, and I do like John William's soundtracks, so I thought I'd see what it was like. I was thouroughly engrossed, but then I suddenly realised something. The format of the magazine was that there were a number of articles on Spielberg interspersed with interviews and reviews of each film. I dived straight for the review of Hook, which is almost my favourite film of all time - after the Star Wars Saga of course - and discovered that it got an awful review; two stars out of a possible five. Spielberg! The magic touch, the weaver of dreams, one of the ugliest and dullest men in movies... Williams! The manic, permanently bewildered little boy in a man's body, patently larger than life and constantly weaving a tale around that breakthrough role of his as Mork from Ork...
