The Horse Whisperer (DVD) ... the DVD: PAL / For director Robert Redford the trick was directing himself. The Oscar-winning director (Ordinary People, Quiz Show) says that he is one kind of actor (in the moment) and a different kind of director (more controlling). Whatever the problems, Redford has worked it out beautifully in this leisurely paced adaptation of Nicholas Evans's bestseller, The Horse Whisperer. When the prized horse of New York magazine editor's (Kristen Scott Thomas) daughter suffers a horrible accident, she tracks down Tom Booker (Redford), a Montana horse healer who is known for working magic. Soon East Coast brashness meets Old West simplicity as the reluctant Annie takes her even more reluctant daughter (Scarlett Johansson) to Marlboro country. Booker's influence goes beyond the horse through healing the heart of daughter and mother. The 2-hour and 44-minute film is a beautiful travelogue of scene and sky (with a giant assist from Oliver Stone's usual cinematographer, Robert Richardson). Never complicated, the movie's rewards may be hidden in its length and Redford's tendency to introduce us to a way of life instead of focusing on a story. The major deviation from the end of Evans's novel is a welcomed change. --Doug Thomas

Despite the horse's almost complete recovery from the physical damage incurred from the accident, the horse's temperament and state of mind prevent any vet from certifying a clean bill of health, so both mother and daughter seek out the help and support of Robert Redford as the 'Horse Whisperer'. GENERAL REVIEW AND OPINION. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Robert Redford directs this movie as well as acting as the main character role of Tom Booker, a rancher from Montana who has a developed gift when it comes to treating traumatised horses. This tear-jerker of a movie offers easy watching and excellent performances all round. The pace is slow and methodical as the film explores the emotions and relationships that develop between the main characters who all have the same goal in sight - to win back the horse's trust and to heal his mind after the near fatal injuries. THE STORYLINE. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Tom Booker is a loner who ...

This is a very emotional movie about a young girl who suffers severe physical and mental injury when involved in a riding accident in which her friend is killed and her horse severely injured. Refusing to have the horse killed as advised by a vet, the girl's mother realises that bringing the horse back to to a condition in which it could be ridden again maybe the only way to help her daughter. She learns of a man through the internet who talks to horse - a horse whisperer - and can train them this way and contacts him to help... This movie contains heartwrenching moments and beautiful scenery but is simply not possible for me to recommend. The scene right ...

Premium Review The Horse Whisperer (DVD): Modern day Black Beauty (289 words)

The film, staring Robert Redford, is basically a modern day Black Beauty (not in the story line, but simply the fact that stories containing horses are always popular). I read the book some 3-4 years ago, and ive only recently seen the film (infact ive just seen it again on Sky Premier!) And unlike some other peoples opinions, I found the film just as enjoyable as the book. (Although for a very short time in the middle the story had run dry)...but not for long. If you dont already know, then the basic story line is about a 12-13 year old girl (called Grave) lives in New York, and she has got a horse (goes by the name of Pilgrim). One day she gets up ...
